Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)
Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a brown head. Chocolate and light bourbon aroma with vanilla. Rich toffee and whiskey flavor with light vanilla and light fruitiness. Fuller bodied. Toffee and caramel linger with whiskey, light vanilla, and light chocolate.

Pours black into a snifter. Creamy mocha head with medium retention recedes leaving spotted tears. Mchocolate aromas. Thick with dark caramel and hot chocolate turning to hot bourbon inthe lasting burn finish.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy brown with medium frothy tan head that lasts. The aroma is a strong roast, chocolate, rye, and oak. Medium mouthfeel with dark chocolate, oak, light booze, rye, with nice sweet finish. Easy to drink, very good.

Bottle - 2013. Pours dark black with a large creamy light brown head that lasts a long time and leaves nice, if clumpy, lacing on the glass. Aroma is anise, burned malts, a bit of whiskey. Flavor has lots of anise (:(), chocolate, slightly burned ashy notes, plus some whiskey. Light sweet and medium bitter, with a bit of acidity. Fullish body, high carbonation. A licorice bomb. Ug. dammit. Addendum - gets a bit better as it breathes and warms

Lots of dark chocolate and some very evident booze here. Pours black without much head or lacing. Bitter, okay finish. Thick, lightly syrupy texture. Notes of dark chocolate and vanilla. Light coffee. Tap at Georgetown pizza paradiso.

2013 bottle split at Bruce’s pad, thanks to Lorna, 27/03/14. Black with a good sized dirty tan head that retains well. Nose is liqourice, light brett, mineral pang, dark fruit, bitter roast, cocoa powder, subtle BA effect. Taste comprises bitter dark fruit tang, raisens, dates Xmas spice, dark toffee, dark malt, molasses. Medium + body, fine carbonation, light booze in the close. Ok impy, lacking a little depth for the ABV but the alcohol is well integrated.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Paul. Pours deep black-brown with a thick, tight beige head. The nose has lots of burnt wood, toasted marshmallows, cocoa. Medium to big sweet flavor, some more burnt wood, cedar, rich chocolate, torched earth, dark cherries. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish with sticky chocolate, more burnt earth, torched wood, dark fruit, alcohol. Very nice. Deep, robust.

Bottle thanks to Lorna/Helen/Adam. It pours black with a thick tan head. The nose is roasted malt, earth, chocolate, rocky road, vanilla, fudge, coconut and marshmallow. The taste is roasted malt, toast, toast, chocolate, earth, alcohol, whiskey, wood and light vanilla with a dry, toasty finish. Fulling body and moderate carbonation. Decent stuff all round.
