Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)
Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Bottle. A- Chocolate, soy sauce, whiskey, cocoa. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Bitter cocoa, chocolate, coffee, licorice, bourbon. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, slightly bitter finish. O- Having absolutely loved everything I’ve tried in the smokestack series, I was excited for this one. Ultimately, I was a little let down. Just not what I have come to expect from a good Imperial Stout. This isn’t horrible, but it was more bitter than I had hoped for as well as being quite grainy. I think I would prefer it all aged instead of blended with fresh ale. This just wasn’t a beer that left me in awe.

Bottle (2013) poured into a Belgian snifter. Consumed on 1/21/2014. Pours jet black with a finger and a half of tan head. Nice lacing around the glass as the beer is consumed. Aromas of whiskey, dark fruit, dark chocolate. Tasting notes of whiskey, dark chocolate, roast, coffee, dark fruit, caramel. The whiskey from the barrel aged portion is really well balanced, not too little and not too much.
4 oz pour on draft (2014 release) at Rustico Alexandria. Consumed on 1/13/2015. Black with light tan head. Aromas of whiskey, chocolate, dark fruit, toffee, caramel. Tastes of whiskey, chocolate, roast, light alcohol, caramel. Full body with a dry finish. Very nice this year, more whiskey than I remember last year having. I believe 2014 was 100% aged as opposed to 2013’s blend.

750 c&c from Bu11zeye. Pours dark black with a fizzy/creamy tan head. Dizzying aroma of molasses, heat and dark malt. And treacle. Full bodied, at least. Flavor is treacle, dark malt, treacle, hint of coffee, touch of heat. Hint of chocolate. Very tasty.

Aroma has a bit of a tart fruity cherry note to it. Some balanced roast and chocolate notes. Also some apricot and plum. A light vanilla and oak character. Not much alcohol or hops in the aroma. Pours a dark brown, not quite black with little to no head that quickly recedes quickly. No lacing and little legs. Flavor starts with sweet chocolate and lots of fruit. The fruit is plum, cherry and a bit of grapes. A light roast character with a lot of sweetness. No hop flavor and light hop bitterness. No astringency at all. Light alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation. Astringency is very low and alcohol warmth is medium low. Overall this beer has a bit of a thin mouthfeel but has a really nice flavor. Very fruit forward with some chocolate but not much bourbon notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sample at Kurt’s 49th birthday party. Pours a dark brownish-black color with a medium light tan head that recedes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Roasted malt, chocolate and coffee in the nose. Rich and smooth body with flavors of mocha, hops and grainy malt. The finish is roasty with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Solid Imperial Stout all around.

Pours a deep, oily black with little to no head to speak of. Quite a bit of alcohol in the aroma, along with some chocolate and anise/licorice. Licorice is really in the forefront of the flavor. There is some chocolate and some coffee, maybe some dark fruit, like plum or raisin. There’s also more than a touch of booze/alcohol to the flavor. This is a good imperial stout.
