Brassée de manière occasionnelle dans l’année, le Barley Wine de la brasserie Sainte-Hélène est une adaptation du style américain sous une forme résolument belge, plus sèche que sa voisine elle n’en demeure pas moins complexe. La puissance du malt qui s’en dégage est contrebalancée par une bonne dose de houblon et une présence en bouche soutenue de l’alcool. Il s’agit d’une bière de dégustation à prendre en pouce café après un bon repas par exemple.

Small bottle tried at the Delirium Café pouring up near murky amber with nice creamy tan head (for a barleywine). The aroma is a bit musty and then unveils firm spicy oak, pretty bold spicy hops and then roaming into some yeasty notes. Smells pretty darn hoppy with a grassy resiny sense too. The taste comes across with bold spicy hops that create a solid spicy oak feel. It then gets resiny to midway with big noble hop bitterness. It stays thick and bitter with bold resiny yum.

Bottle: Poured a clear copper color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar and bitter hops is somewhat interesting. Taste is an interesting mix between some caramelized sugar with notes of candi sugar and some American bittering hops. Body is lighter then average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nothing here that has been made much better in the US before – It would have been nice to find a Belgian twist to this one.

at yespr tasting. cloudy brown, smooth white head. sort of soapy malty sweet aroma. flavor is malts, bitter hops, faint wood. a hoppy bw, pretty good out of belgium, european style.

Bottle 37,5 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours a hazy amber with an off-white head. Sweet aroma of caramel and overripe fruit with no pronounced hop character. Solid body, licorice notes and overripe fruit. Ends with a warming and distinct alcohol character. Hop character is fairly disappointing though. 260911

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of malt, straw, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, spices, alcohol, and caramel, leading to a dry finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

37.5 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden orange with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty, light spiced. Mild acidic, spiced, toasted malty. Light fruity. Thick and hoppy dense finish.

Bottle. Pours muddy brown. Off white head. Nose of coriander, burnt orange peel, toffee, caramel and spicy hops. Taste is mostly harsh barley and grain with lots of malt, some toffee and caramel. Some alcohol in finish. Medium body.

37.5 cl bottle thanks to and shared with sebletitje on September 15, 2011BB 02/2016Hazy copper color, yellow head. Sweet, malty, spicy, loads of alcohol scent. Sweet, bitter, alcohol taste. Huge alcohol aftertaste, also spicy. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Finishes dry. Warming alcohol.

Bouteille 37.5cl Orangée, blanche crémeuse. Arôme levure fermentée, alcool bien présent voire plus que anticipé, aspect beurre, sucre résiduel avec touche de fruits noirs, malt est modéré tout comme le houblon qui ajoute une pointe fleurie. Très bon essaie pour St Hélèné, mais bière qui parait encore bien jeune et pourrait encore bénéficier de qcq moins en bouteille. Reste fruitée et douce, houblon est un peu trop en avant laissant une amertume qui enlève un peu au profile attendu du barley wine. Sur la fin, note caramel sucré collant aux lèvres, alcool est bien là et réchauffant.

Roping!!! yet good light-beige head over amber beer with a reddish sheen. Sherry-like nos, rosewater and old Tarragonwine. Taste is not bad, with alcohol and higher alcohols; fruity and other yeasty esters. Retronasal flowery (violets) flavour. Obviously very slick, roping, gluey viscous. Very strange beer, not bad, only the roping is off-putting. Not a real Barley Wine, all tasters agree. Thanks to Stefaan!
