We built our first brewhouse using recycled dairy equipment. We had to test our handywork, so we loaded it up with a heavy, dark Stout. That first batch was a 13-hour labor of love, and when we sipped the first bottle, we knew we had a keeper. With a nod to the West Coast, we balance Stout’s deep, roasted malt flavors with earthy, whole-cone hops.

Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, the Sierra Nevada Stout is satisfyingly rich. Caramel and Black malts give the Stout its deep, dark color and pronounced roasted flavor.

35 cl bottle, 5.8%. Dark brown colour, almost black, thick beige head. Aroma is dark roasted malts with dark chockolate and a bit of coffee, possibly a remainder of yeast. Lots of hops, unexpected for the style. Dry, sharp, bitter finish. Bitter hops in the finish with some alcohol. Proper carbonation, light to medium bodied, easy to drink and well balanced. Solid stout, nice.

35,5 cl bottle @ O’Connell’s, Tampere. Rated on 18.03.2009
Aroma is somewhat sweet with roastiness, some licorice and chocolate. Flavour has semi‐dark chocolate, fruity notes, caramel and hints of coffee. Good, but I must say that I expected more. I like my stouts less fruity.

Opaque dark brown beer with a small pale tan head. Softish palate, semi dry. Lactose and mild dark malt. Trace of roast. Dry finish. Forensic trace of hops. Standard stuff.

It pours a medium to dark brown yielding a jet black body with a two inch foamy tan head. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen. The head must last at least a good three and a half minutes even after I took several sips. There is some nice foamy rings left. The smell has a nice combination between chocolate and coffee with some added hops. The taste is robust and bold with the previously mentioned smells coming through with an added maltiness. The palate is about a medium and there is nothing harsh on the tongue. It has a decent drinkability. Overall, I would say this is a solid American Stout that I would have again.

12fl oz. Dark brown almost black colour, with a beige head with average duration. Aroma is roasty, slightly smoky and coffee notes. Flavor has burnt malts notes, ashes, dark chocolate and black coffee. The final is mild dry with a light bitterness. Carbonation and body are medium.

This pitch black stout has a lovely nose of coffee and cocoa, overlying a slight aroma of grapefruit and seawater. The hops are more pronounced on the tongue, with plenty of coffee and some aniseed also in evidence. Perhaps the only knock on this beer is the the hops are too prominent for a stout, robbing you of that nice stout aftertaste.
