Julebryg-style dark rye ale
Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

750mL bottle, split with manuchampions, pours dark mahogany, with a big off-white head. Aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and light chocolate. Flavour of bready malts, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and yeast. Very highly carbonated. Probably the best example of the style I've had thus far.

Bottle. Dark brown/amber with big tan head. Flavour is malt, rye, caramel, sweet, bitter, spices, toffee and yeast.

Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy dirty brown color ale with a large light brown frothy head with good retention and some excellent lacing. Aroma of caramelized rye notes with some residual sugar notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by loads of rye malt notes with some caramelized sugar and malt notes and a somewhat unrefined grainy finish which is more or less pleasant. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation. Not the best rye beer out there but not that bad either – I could have done without the unrefined grainy notes

Draft Sample at Bavarian Lodge. Very… "different" nose. Toasted rye seeds, a bit of rauchmalz, but not bacony like some smoke beers. Deep brown color, fine bubbles in the head. Yeah, toasted grain in the taste. Rye spice and a slight tartness that comes with roggens or weizens. An herbal "digestiv" note remains on the tongue. Very unusual, but quite enjoyable.

On tap at The Belvidere at Broad on 07/22/2010. Cloudy dark amber body with a medium rocky off-white head. Slightly sour cherry and spicy wheat aroma. Sweet tart cherry and spicy rye flavor. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation.

Dark, almost opaque brown color, steady off-white creamy head. Light coffee, vegetables and spices in the nose. Medium to full bodied. Licorice, caramel, herbs and spices ... Jägermeister touch. Light sherryish, cellar too.

Bottled. Hazy ambery colour, small beigeish brown head. Aroma is caramel, grains, some rubber and mild rye. Flavour is caramel malts, some dark fruits, mild rye and some dark dry fruits. Mild yeastyness as well.

Deep brown color. Not so pugnent, but fairly strong rye notes. Mouthis very malty with tons of ru grain spice. Full bodied. A frsh loaf inmy mouth. Would be awesome with Gouda cheese. Dry rye finish. Awesome awesome.

750 ml. Hazy, deep amber body, approaching brown. Fizzy, tan head, mostly diminishing. Dark rye bread aroma along with notes of dark chocolate, nuts, toast, strong coffee and hints of molasses, floral hops, cassis, cola, smoke. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes lightly sweet, moderately bitter and moderately acidic. Medium body, water texture and fizzy carbonation, too much in fact. The aroma is interesting and complex, the taste less so. Hints of grain and wood with a lingering taste of burnt peat.
