Julebryg-style dark rye ale
Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

A reddish amber ale with a thin moka head. A chalky aroma of sweet cinnamon hearts, a bit off. In mouth, a sweet caramel malt with notes of licorice, cinnamon, nutty, oily mouthfeel, herbal and interesting. On tap at Datz, May 24 2010.

Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy dark brown with a medium brown head that lasts. Aroma had notes of roasted malts, rye and a bit of a dark bread. Flavor is similar with the rye standing out backed by a bit of roasted malt and perhaps a bit of caramel.

Bottle. Pours a rich mahogany with a strong, beige head. A dynamic nose: notes of dark fruits, chocolate, molasses, and some spices. Flavor begins sweet, with dates and figs, then eases into a malty phase with some chocolate, then finishes with some spice imparted by the rye. Medium body with pretty lively carbonation. A great beer overall.

750mL pours mahogany with minute long tan head. The aroma is a mix of chocolate, dark fruity esters, some black strap molasses and a mild rye spiciness. The taste begins with dark fruity prunes and dates and then moving toward mild notes of chocolate, dark roasted malts and a mild amount of smoldering rye spiciness. It stays pretty sweet with the addition of caramel to the black strap molasses note.

Nutty ale, highly carbonated. Rye and pumpernickel are dominant on the palatte. Slight malt undertones.

bottle at Fort Wayne tasting - Pours up very hazy amber with a gigantic head. Very carbonated. The aroma is of rye with some fruit notes. Flavor is really heavy on the rye, probably the most assertive rye presence I’ve had in a beer. It’s medium bodied and overall okay, but not much more.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a thick and slowly diminishing head after gushing out of the bottle. Sheet of lacing on the glass. Caramel malt and spices in the nose. Medium body with flavors of grainy malt, caramel, rye and a bit of dark fruit. The finish is tasted malt with rye and spice left over. A decent beer overall.

Location: Tap at RFD, 3/6/10
Aroma: Aroma of bread, nuts, caramel, roasted notes, and some fruit
Appearance: A reddish colored beer with an off-white head
Flavor: The taste is malty, roasted, with some earhty hop flavors for some balance, light fruitiness
Palate: Carbonation is a bit too high, decent body and mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Overall this is a solid beer, nothing too special, but it has some nice flavors. Probably one of the better things I've had from the Bruery, but I find most of the beers I've tried from them to be pretty underwhelming.

Dark amber brown, small light yellow head. Hoppy, and roasted grains, toffee caramel aroma. Flavor is dark caramelly, roasted stuff, chocolate, dark malts, dark fruits, some booze. If they tried to hit "juleøl" style, they did it extremely well, keeping the beer still enjoyable. Also reminds me of belgian dark beer (dark fruits and spices) and schwarzbier (the roasted stuff in the beer).

Muddy chestnut colour. Some head. The aroma has nice rye bread notes, with hints of caramelized malts. Overcarbonated palate. Quite chewy. Not very interesting, after showing some promise on the nose.
