Backlog October 2013. Amber body under a decent, dense off-white head. Aroma has malt and dry fruit, gives a sweet impression with an alcoholic touch. Taste is actually sweet with rich malt, dry fruit, acidic berries, caramel and warming alcohol. Fine body with long lasting aftertaste. It’s actually very nice and I’m glad I had the opportunity to enjoy a few more of this after this first rating session.

Bottle split at Watford Tasting, thanks to Danny, 11/03/22. Mahogany brown pour with a beige cap that dissipates edgewards. Nose is dusty fruit rinds, tobacco, damp cloth, earthy, funk, wood must. Taste comprises toffee, dates, prunes, stewed fruits, candied fruit peel, mellow barrel, damp oak. Medium plus bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a spike of alcohol. Decent.

Bottle shared at the watford tasting 11/03/2022. A chestnut brown coloured pour with a a halo of beige head. Aroma is semi sweet, balsamic, brown sugars, vinous, sherry notes, musty. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, jammy, brown sugars mellow funk, apple, toffee apple. Palate is semi sweet, oily, no condition.

Hazy, no head, amber…looks thick. Soft body. Soft vinous notes. Good complexity to it. Not familiar with this grape but the beer isn't bad at all.

Bottle. Dark amber color, hazy. Oak, noble rot wine in the strong maltaroma. Malty sweet flavor with noble rot wine, oak, alcohol and dried fruit. oak in the finish. Many layers of flavors compensate the intense sweetness.

Sour and wine barrel aged ‘quadrupel’ by Alvinne in its basic form – so to my great surprise, I apparently only had some of the variants so far, but never this regular version… From tap at Gainsbar in Kortrijk, where the owner advised against it because the keg was apparently already too old – but I took the risk anyway, and did not regret it. Open, loose- and uneven-bubbled, pale ecru coloured, interrupted and irregular head on a very dark mahogany brown beer with ruddy hue. Complex and lovely ‘mature’ nose of figs soaked in rum, very old madera, dusty old wooden barrels or even old oak furniture, dry brown bread crust, candied cherries, dry red wine, sour yoghurt, blackberries, dry earth, walnut shells. Fruity onset, lively sour blackberry and apple playing with sweeter plum and fig notes, medium carbonation, full mouthfeel made astringent by the ongoing fruity tartness, which becomes a bit wry in the end, like a very dry wine; meanwhile, though, a brown-bready and full walnutty malt body unfolds, providing some counterbalance against the tartness. The whole does end dry and astringent, also due to a pronounced tannic woodiness, some toasty malt bitterness, an earthy hoppiness and rum-like, warming yet not overly heating alcohol, but mostly by that wine tartness. Earthy dusty attic and dried fruit effects linger in the background. Bittersweet, dry and tart and in that sense not following the classic quadrupel profile: this is much more a very strong, idiosyncratic ‘oud bruin’, something Alvinne excels at like no other. Glad I took the risk of drinking this from an aged keg: the beer has indeed aged in an elegant, ‘dusty’ way that adds only more charm to an already complex and mature profile.
