Brown 11.2 oz bottle into a large long stemmed sniffer. Appears a bit viscous in the pour. Smells of volatile vanilla extract and it reminds me of some helles beers, with their slender candy background olfactory. Color is a combination of clear red, orange and yellow. No perceivable carbonation. First taste is strong alky, like burning, man. Penetrating alky effect almost like hard liquor was added to the brew. Afraid to take another hit. Immense seat kicking back of throat punch. Rather massive in its own way. Way too much for this session brew lover. Exactly what I thought I’d get. Saw it on the shelf and passed it by for the last two years. Probably should have left it there. Causes the hair on the back of my neck to stand up and at times nearly triggers the gag reflex. No doubt this is one of the strongest tasting beers I’ve had. Yea, sherry or port fer sure. Don’t make this yer first beer if you are a recent pale lager convert. Date code 1872, heheh. Rude crude and at times, just plain unenjoyable for a beer. Hot as brandy without the fruity sweetness. S5L3F1T2O5 EKU28 11% Eisbock

[15 year old vintage - thanks a million Ungstrup] Hazy brown with tiny head. Sweet fruity aroma with malt, sherry and plums. Sweet flavor with dark overripe fruits, toasted malt, caramel and sherry notes.

(3/10/08) Bottle at Delirium Cafe in Brussels. Best before 4/4/09. Clear amber with lively carbonation and a slowly-diminishing off-white head. Aroma of a lot of malt and caramel. Sweet flavor of malt, caramel and some alcohol. Medium to full-bodied. Great stuff but a bit too much alcoholic feel.

Served in a proper EKU Snifter at Academie de la Biere in Paris. Aroma is sweet of dry fruits and maybe some raspberries with alcohol. Clear amber body with a small head that disappears soon after pouring. Tastes a lot like the Samichlaus I had recently. Drinks a bit like a liquor with a kind of syrupy feel and noticeable alcohol in the taste and stomach, but it is pretty good overall. Not something that you could or would want to drink a lot of.

0.33 l bottle from a Merkur in Graz. Well, my first Eisbock, finally something to try my snifter on. Poured very nice orange-red body with medium pale orange head that went down fast with impressive sound. Interestingly, very weak aroma, malty, alcoholic like a whisky with maybe even some plums or similar dark fruits on the threshold of imagination. Flavor let’s say full bodied, bitter in very strange way, muled whiskey and brandy kind of alcoholic, pretty simple, yet it tends to show some new components. I’ve felt also bit of oak, caramel and some spices. In the finish pretty much of the flavor is felt, but with some sweetness rounding it all. Very warming, maybe I should’ve kept it until the weekend and share with friends, when we will sleep on a mountain in tents at about -20°C :) All in all, not bad indeed, but nothing special, so I expect more from my next Eisbock. Definitely not an everyday drink.

Bottle. Pours apple juice colored w/ a thin white head. Aroma is, oddly, scotch whisky. Taste is all kinds of malty, toffee, raisin, caramel, et cetera, et cetera. No hops to speak of. A little on the overly sweet side, but still good.

Clear orange in color with minimal white head. Sweet caramelized aroma with fruits, apricots, burnt sugar, and a touch of alcohol. Thick body. This is almost a delicious beer. Carmalized malts, sugar, apricots, and alcohol. The alcohol is too intense, burning like a shot of vodka. The finish is mostly sweet alcohol. I was initially intrigued and excited by the flavor untill the alcohol kicked in. I generally enjoy big, intense beers. But I would have liked a more mellow, well blended beer. Still, on a cold winters night this would be a fine beer to have.

Amber gold with a fine white lasting head. Sweet - very sweet & deep malty aroma. Sweet - nearly cloying with a easy noticeable alcohol note. It has raisins & also a vinous feel. Still a bit too sweet & warm actually! couldnt finish a whole bottle!
