Brewed for St. Patrick’s Day, Killarney was created to honor the Irish influence on Montana’s culture. Brewed first in February of 1988, before any other American breweries came out with their versions of an Irish Red style beer. Killarney is Jürgen’s invention of the beer style and one of his favorite Bayern beers. It is brewed with two-row Pilsenser, Caramel, Munich, Wheat and German Dunkel malt. Bayern Killarney has an alcohol content of 5.7% Alc. by Vol. (14.2% Plato o.g.) and is available seasonally on draft and in bottles.

From a 12 oz bottle it is a clear golden color with a slight head. The aroma is malt and the taste is a slight bitter taste of caramel with some malt notes
finishes bitter

12oz bottle to a 8oz glass. I am not sure what Bayern is able to do with their malts and lagering to make them so damn appealing to me. The delicate balance of toast, sweet, and well-lagering are really working over my taste buds. There is a bit of dustiness setting in that I think is a consequence of this not being super fresh but otherwise a sweet, not sugary, clean and earthy with faint hop end.

Bottle: A vigorous pour left a minimal white head atop a pale copper body. Light aroma is sweet, mostly caramel, but some fruit and toast also emerges. Caramel malt and candied fruit flavor, with very little grass or florals. Easy to drink with no single element taking center stage. Falls nicely into the amber lager style, imo. It’s been fun trying to track down this elusive St. Paddy’s day release for the past four years, but the chase was more exciting then the catch.

12 oz bottle thanks to my brother and sister-in-law. Pours clear copper with a dissipating white head that falls into a ring of foam; half way through the glass all traces of head and foam disappear. Aroma consists of yeasty dough, vinegar (sour ale-ish, weird), caramel. Taste is caramel sweet and a little sour with a little dry bitterness coming up in the finish. Along with the dominant caramel flavor, biscuity flavors intermingle with some graininess. Creamy mouthfeel with average carbonation. Overall, a weird and boring beer at the same time.

Malty aroma. No detectable hop. Nice coppery color with a beige head that’s substantial. A bit thin bodied. Starts with malt medium sweet, develops a bit more body, finishes not very dry. Hard to pick up any bitter. Decent drink, if you are not looking for hop.
