Sitting in the Frankfurt airport terminal waiting for a plane to Turin may not be the most inspired location to write this label, but we jetsetters do what we must to meet deadlines....

This was a ton of fun to brew. So far, the most memorable part about it was sampling the first wort which had been mashed with lots of specialty grains and about 250 lbs of pure cocoa. It was amazingly smooth, velvety sweet, and rich with chocolate. I felt like I was tasting the luscious sweetness of a chocolate river. There’s gotta be a market for this, I swear!

I can’t wait to taste this finished creation that sprang forth from Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard’s delicious homebrew. The cherries, a blend of dark and tart, will be added in a few days, and should make this a truly remarkable stout. It couldn’t have been done without the help and expertise from John Trogner, brewer of great things at Tröegs in PA and longtime friend of our own Bill Sherwood. It’s our second time brewing with fruit, and our second time brewing with chocolate. Second time’s a charm (just like the first time)!

Bottle courtesy of tastybeer, thanks! Very dark brown, almost black. Nice dark brown head with fair retention. Guess what it smells like? No surprises. Taste is like artificial cherry candy. A bit odd.

12 fl oz bottle at Sunset Grill. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malty and breadish, dark malty and roasted. Dark cherry too. Roasted malty and dark cherry fruity. Dark malty and roasted into a dry and slight fruity finish.

Bottle at Birch & Barley, October 2011. Dark brown, almost black with a minimal tan head. A lot of chocolate in both the aroma and taste, also notes of vanilla, cherries and roasted malt. An interesting and rather complex beer. I liked it!

Pours a thick, oily black with nice-sized, foamy head. Aroma of coffee, nuts, chocolate. Flavor includes those, along with a sourness that cuts through--a result of the cherries? There isn’t really a pronounced cherry flavor per se, just this rather obnoxious sourness that doesn’t really add a lot to the beer.

Süß-schokoladiger Malzantrunk. 13/12/12/10//12

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled sometime in July most likely. Pours black as night with a fairly dense 1 finger tan head with very nice retention that reduces to a thin lacing cap that lasts. Decent amount of lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of big sour cherries, dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, coffee, and cherry juice. Decent aromas here, but not as good as I was hoping. Taste of big dark chocolate, tart cherries, bitter coffee, caramel, and molasses. Slight bit of bitterness present on the finish; with lingering notes of big dark chocolate, caramel, tart cherry, and molasses. Decent balance of tartness and sweetness is present, with the sweet chocolate taking over the most. Insanely thick and creamy mouthfeel with light-medium carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall a really nice stout collaboration. I was hoping for more tart cherry flavor, similar to Bells Cherry Stout.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Cherry aromas. Soft with sweet cherry upfront turning to chocolate in the dry, lasting finish.

12oz bottle pours deep dark mahogany with nice mocha head. The aroma offers up a mix of thick cherry juice, chocolate brownie, some dark roasted coffee and spicy black licorice. The taste is similar. It flirts with chocolate and chocolate brownie as cherry juice rimmed with a mild level of cherry tartness comes to the surface every now and then. Around the cherry and roasty chocolate notes I get black licorice joining in creating a bit of a spicy fruit cake sensation. It leaves a pleasing chocolate note behind in the after taste with slightly tart cherry juice around the edges of the palate. I’m enjoying this very much but it does seem to be pulling itself in several different directions.
