Vichtenaar is a beer that is brewed on the basis of deep-roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water pumped from a well with a depth of 172 meters. After the main fermentation and the second ripening, the Vichtenaar undergoes a third fermentation in oak feeds for a period of several months. The large upright oak barrels have a capacity varying between 5000 and 25000 liters.
Vichtenaar is a Flemish Red-Brown ale: a traditional and typical beer for West Flanders. The taste of Vichtenaar can be described as slightly acidic and complex and this due to the long fermentation in the oak foeder. The ruddy taste of Vichtenaar makes it particularly thirst-quenching. Vichtenaar is the oldest still brewed Flemish Red-Brown ale.

250 ml bottle shared by Werckmeister, thanks!
Dark copper, slightly brown body, with a medium, fluffy, dissipating, yellowish head.
Aroma of glue, leather, overripe fruits, red wine, barrel, sweet berries, some vinegar.
Taste follows this, with less glue notes, some more vanilla.
Medium, a bit oily mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes sweet-sour, vinous, a bit wooden, fruity, a bit leathery.
Nice one. A quite typical style example, with sweet and sour notes in a good balance. A bit too much sharp glue notes in the nose and I’m also missing a bit more depth. Overall still an enjoyable beer I would drink again.

0,25l bottle at home shared with Saeglopur and Simay. BB 27.07.2017. dark brown color, small tan head. smells sour, glueish, berry notes, light oak, light caramel, bit glueish smell but overall good. medium body, quite bubbly carbonation, slick mouthfeel. bit weird taste, quite sour, glueish again, inbetween sweetness pops through, berry notes, some sour apples, quite a lot of marzipan, nutty. finishes sour and sweet with berry notes, sour apples and some marzipan. Quite interesting brew, the glueish notes are a bit districting, not sure if the bottle is too fresh, or where this is coming from, but overall still rather enjoyable.

Dark brown pour with a tan head that gives way to a long lasting lacing. Smells like macerated grapes, caramel and dried fruit (figs, prunes). The taste is sour, with notes of macerated grapes, balsamic vinegar and apple cider.

Bottle at Maakun’s. Balsamico, fruity and spicy, sour grapes/berries, very woody, rubbery resin, minty woodglue. Quite sour with wooden character with underlying (brown)sugary sweetness. Otherwise very soft and minerallike texture. Interesting brew!

Bottle shared thanks to Sjogro. Dark reddish brown with big beige head. Overripe fruits, lots of oxidized sherry notes, balsamico, brown bread, light nailpolish remover, sour lactic notes, lots of dried fruits and red berries. Great balance between sweet oxidized overripe fruit notes and sour berries. Medium bodied with a bit fizzy carbonation. Nice stuff, without the nailpolish remover it would be great.

0.25 l bottle from belgiuminabox, best before December 2016. Clear, very dark red with a thin, frothy, quickly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish-sourish, fruity-malty aroma of sour cherries, red wine, vinegar and oak. Sweetish-sourish, fruity malty taste of brown sugar, sour cherries, red wine, vinegar and oak, followed by a short, sweetish-tart finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent and astringent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite sweet without being artificial but also not that complex, rather simple Oud Bruin. Pleasant to drink nonetheless.
