Belgian Tripel (Smokestack Series)
Bottle conditioned ale. Lately it occurs to us that if, back in 1989, you planned on starting a brewery in the back of your carpentry shop, you'd been wise to seek out someone like Harold “Trip” Hogue. A collector of ancient Volvos, Trip was well qualified for the make-do engineering required to coax recalcitrant equipment out of retirement and into making the first Boulevard beers. Today, he is our longest-tenured employee. We offer this rich, golden Tripel in grateful tribute to dedication, everywhere.

Sampled at Nærbø Ølfestival 2013. Slightly unclear pale golden body with a medium sized white head. Aroma is a bit light, but quite delicate. Light malt, some fruit, spices, wheat and alcohol. Flavor is surprisingly refreshing, light fruity, spicy, grass, herbs and sugar. Well balanced in body and moderate in aftertaste. Nice, quiet refreshing and the alcohol is rather well hidden for an ale at this ABV.

Good attempt at the style. Towering fluffy head, buttery aroma, cloudy golden body. Taste is sourdough, butter, spice. Smooth on the palate, fairly thick consistency, good, but not Belgian.

Bottle 750ml @ Hotel Room, Hacienda Hotel LAX, El Segundo, CA
Pours hazy golden with a huge white head. Aroma has notes of malt, yeast, dried fruits, alcohol and sugar. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long warm, yeasty and fruity finish. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to fizzy.

Bottle, 75cl corked. It’s a lightly hazy golden-orange beer with a big, creamy, off-white head leaving some curtains. The aroma is quite orangey, with a hint of spices, grassy hops, alcohol, Belgian yeast and biscuity malts. A touch of white sugar too. Lightly warming on the palate, full-bodied, smooth yet effervescent. There’s a hint of bubblegum in the flavor, with white sugar, oranges, a spiced touch and a fine bitterness. Lasting finish where there’s room for a little solvent, but mostly it’s bitter, fruity and warming. A nice one indeed, but a tad too warming I think. 130823

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours hazy golden with big dense white head. Aroma is spritzy citrus, medium body, well carbonated, and dense small bubble lacing. Taste is long citrus, yeasty, balanced with some hops, with a hint of alcohol that peaks at times. Very good tripel.

Bottle - Grass, lemon, yeast, banada and some other fruit peeking about. Clear gold with a bubbly big head. Citrus, hay, peach and yeast. Great on the tongue, soft mellow carbonation with a great mouthfeel. A robust flavorful tripel, not my normal style but this is a great example.

Crisp, slightly hazy copper coloured body with bright orange highlights and a nice thinnish off-white head. Aroma of alcohol, coriander seed, curacao, whole oranges, white pepper and tons of alcohol and yeast. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malty flavour with a big alcohol warmth, some deep curacao and caster sugar notes, a bit of light spices and a lot of bitterness. Aftertaste is quite strong with the wheat/malt coming through the most, some lighter sugars and a ton of alcohol and bitterness. Overall, an okay beer - but not such a great tripel - a bit too bitter and strong with too much alcohol than most others in the style and not rounded enough. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 24-October-2013 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washington on 05-April-2013.

12 oz. bottle. Bright orange color, with a medium, pillowy off-white head. Mandarin oranges, bread dough, bananas, and cloves dominate the nose, with some notes of bubblegum, hay, and apples. Citrus sweetness up front, with some tartness and light bitterness in the finish. Heavy body, chewy, and a little acidic. This is a surprisingly delicious and flavorful tripel. The esters add a nice fruity touch. One of the best American tripels I’ve tried.
