Passchendaele Porter meets all the characteristics of the British beer style of the same name. The taste of roasted malts is clearly present, complemented by subtle caramel notes. The soft bitterness is balanced by a sweet fruitiness, making this dark beer easy to drink. Passchendaele Porter is brewed in memory of the victims of the Battle of Passchendaele 1917.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with average, frothy, osteoporosing, minimally lacing, tan head. Roasty and minimally chocolately, dark malty and sweet-ish, caramel malty aroma, a touch of cola, dark caramel, a fruity, yeasty touch of plum and blue berries, minimally metallic, hoppy overtones. Taste is roasty dark malty, sweet-ish caramel malty, slightly yeasty fruity, hints of cola, a touch of liquorice, dark caramel, blue berries, plum, a subtle bitter hoppy touch with metallic aspects. Watery texture, minimally repellent, metallic palate, fine, prickly carbonation. A bit thin, cautious, narrow - OK.

Fles 33cl thuis gedeeld. Rood fruit, pruim, licht roasted malts, zoetig, lichte bittertonen, ver weg beetje chocoladetonen. Wat dun. (2-1-2021).

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ van Rooij, Culemborg. Black with a beige head. Sweet coffee aroma with some chocolate. Sweet taste with a sweet finish. Some lingering bitterness in the background as well. More than decent Belgian styled porter.

Black colour, beige foam. Nose of caramel, some roasted malts. Rather sweet, light bitter, light roasty. A bit cloying and sweet.

Donkerbruin tot zwart bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is bitterzoet en licht bitter hoppig met iets van karamel en chocolade. Is wat waterig in de mond.

Almost black with thin head. Dark malts are present. Completely lacking in bitterness and far too sweet means it does not deliver on its thirst quenching promise.

The new, dark counterpart of Passchendaele, adhering to a historically very British beer style, not coincidentally. Thanks to tderoeck for sharing. Medium thick, pale greyish beige, mousy, stable head, very dark chestnut brown robe with ruby red glow. Aroma of crumbled cocoa cookies, Ersatz chocolate or indeed 'Ovomaltine' as my esteemed colleague writes below, bubblegum, nougat, candi sugar, brownies, dried figs, baked banana slices. Sweet onset (though nowhere sticky), fizzy carb, banana- and ripe pear-like fruity notes with clear bubblegum effect, bit soapy body; caramelly malts with again that Ersatz chocolate and brown cookie effect, showing a very light toasty bitterish note in the end, while this annoying bubblegum factor lingers about. Crumbled cookies, 'Ovomaltine', bubblegum and sugared tea impressions at the back, with some soapiness too. I disliked the original blonde version of this brand, but this one is fortunately a lot more tolerable - just do not try to convince me that this is a porter: if anything, this is a Belgian style dubbel with a bit more dark maltiness to it, even if the overall effect vaguely resembles even a Bavarian Dunkelweizen, as tderoeck noticed. Not bad, but I am not enthused to go out and find a few bottles of this either.

14/III/20 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ lockdown tasting (home), BB: VIII/2021 (2020-262)

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, pretty stable, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet, lots and lots of ripe banana, bit malty, bubble gum. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body. Taste: sweet start, pretty metallic, caramel notes, soft bitterness, some charcoal roast, thin though, bit sugary, malty, lots of ripe banana. Aftertaste: hint of chocolate, little bitter, metallic finish, disappointing porter, fermented with a Belgian yeast strain. Bad combo.
