Old Thumper has a distinctive, slightly peppery aroma. The luscious balance of grain and hops leads to a bittersweet finish and results in a round and surprisingly delicate strong ale.
Old Thumper was created by veteran British brewer, Peter Austin, founder of Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England and mentor to our very own Alan Pugsley. This non-traditional English bitter is brewed in the US exclusively by Shipyard.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a light copper with small off-white head. Medium body, medium carbonation, medium lacing, and pleasant caramel aroma. Taste is grainy caramel malt and slightly astringent bitter finish.

500ml bottle. Filtered amber-tan color. Soapy, patchy head. Sweet malty aroma, with an underlying fishiness. The taste of the finings really dominates and overwhelms any subtlety. Spicy and pungent, with an almost rye-like flavor. Quite unimpressive. Syrupy and odd. A mess of an ESB.

Once upon a time, I picked this beer up and, while it didn’t inspire me to immediately become a fan of craft brewing, as later experiences did, it was very pleasurable and opened me up to more interesting flavors in beer. So, I have a touch nostalgia for this one. At any rate, this beer has a big caramel flavor and a fairly unique yeastiness, that I now understand is Shipyard’s signature. The beer looks very nice with a highlighted amber liquid and a fairly sticky head. The aroma is caramel malt and a touch of interesting fruity esters. The flavor is quite good and big for the abv with a lot of malt and a clean, dry hop finish. It’s an excellent session beer that doesn’t skimp on the flavor. The feel is nicely chewy but not astonishing.

Bottle. An OK beer. Pours a murky gold-brown with a fast-fading, white head. Light malt aroma, some faint caramel. Flavor has moderate sweetness, some grass notes, mild bitterness in the finish. Medium body with light carbonation. Certainly drinkable.

From tap at Monks Kettle. Pours clear and golden orange with a huge, creamy and off-white head. Aroma is butterish and dark caramelish. Bitter, dry malty and light breadish malty. Bitter and dry butterish finish. Tapline is clearly not good.

12 ounce bottle from Market Street Wine Shop, Downtown Location, Charlottesville, VA. This is a Shipyard beer? WTF???? Pours a clear amber color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma is caramel, floral hops notes and faint anise. Taste is caramel, spicy, minty and peppery hops, graham crackers, green apple and fruit loops. Thin-medium bodied.

The twist off cap bomber pours out deep copper with some haze and nice tan head. The aroma seems like spicy hops mixing with brown sugar, crystal malts and spiced red apple wedges. Hey, lots more flavor than I was expecting and virtually none of the classic Shipyard diacetyl. I get a bowl full of spiced ripe red apple wedges along with spice and earthy hops.

Woody and buttery cherry aroma. Muddy ochre pour, headless. Flavorless and tinny. Bitter without character. Diacetyl present.
