Old Thumper has a distinctive, slightly peppery aroma. The luscious balance of grain and hops leads to a bittersweet finish and results in a round and surprisingly delicate strong ale.

Old Thumper was created by veteran British brewer, Peter Austin, founder of Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England and mentor to our very own Alan Pugsley. This non-traditional English bitter is brewed in the US exclusively by Shipyard.

Transparent reddish brown with a slightly off white head. Malty, biscuity aroma. Flavor is all malt, grain, crackers and biscuit. Finish is dry. Good session beer but nothing remarkable.

OK, so I was fooled into buying a british beer only to find out it was from the northeast. Brown bottle with a twist off cap. A little orangy colored when compared to a pale yellow american lager. Strong sweet alky aroma, its a warnoing. Taste follow aroma , rather strongish with lots of what seems to be alky taste hints. Medium low carbonation. Very difficult to enjoy at times. Needs a few more manners. Strongish near whiskey attitude. Must be more than 6% alky. Odd bitter aftertawste follows each sip. Overall, comes across a little rude. Same personality as many strong ales.

I suppose this is a standard ringwood yeast, but I’m not so sensitive to the diacertyl. This is definitely a malt forward beer, caramelized with a vague cereal graininess, and a background of sweet butterscotch. Hop aromas are minimally herbal, not much hop flavoring, leading to an essentially balanced finish. Copper color, smallish head.

Bottle: Poured a medium brown color ale with an average size head with average retention. Aroma of light caramel malt with a weird yeasty flavour which kind of clash with the malt. Taste is mostly dominated by semi-weak malt with some weird yeast finish which doesn’t really fits well. I wasn’t too fond of this one but it seems to be a recurring theme with my taste buds and Shipyard yeast.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with a thin white heade. Aroma of nuts, floral hops and from the bottle, bananas. Flavour of malt, sweet fruit. Light body. Not much finish, sweet malt.

Bottle. Berry/apple malt and light pepper hops aroma. Clear amber color with moderate head and very nice lacing. Smooth apple and raspberry malt flavor with moderate hops finish. Has a nice mouthfeel - llike a handpumped ale that is usually absent from US ales. Good stuff.

Pours a bright, clear amber into a shaker. Off-white head subsides to skim surface and stays. Fake fruit candy (Smarties - US version) aromas. Crisp and lightly carbonated. Malty with a lasting bitter pit fruit finish.

bottle - Pours amber and clear with a thin, fading head. The aroma is very good and includes yeast and apple notes. Malts with apple dominate the flavor. It has a medium body and is too fizzy on the palate. The finish is crisp and pleasant. This is a good beer.

Aroma is very syrupy with a bit of a sour cherry-like fruitiness in the background. Flavor is OK, but could be a little stronger and more developed in my opinion. There is a caramel malt sweetness that provides a nice backbone and then gives way to a hops dominated bitterness that is pleasant and not quite as biting as some of the more outrageous ESB’s out there. It almost slides into that grapefruit/pine hopping of an IPA.
