Cask at St James Tavern, Winchester. Low key stewed fruit aroma. Chestnut. A few mm of a bubbly off-white head. Light bitter. Malty. Underlying caramel sweetness. Thin. Light. Soft carbonation. Long finish. Not sure the rum really makes its presence known. OK.

Cask at the moon under water Watford Jdw. A clear deep amber coloured pour with a lasting beige cap. Aroma is nutty. Brown bread, sugar, toffee apple. Flavour is composed of nutty malts, twig, tangy apple, woodland berries,. Palate is. Medium light bodied, decent cask condition.. Lingering woody earthy twig.

Cask: Off white frothy head stayed on a dark amber, still body. Dark fruit & burnt aroma. Medium body, minimal carbonation, smooth. Dark fruits, brown sugar & dark spirit tastes.

Cask at Broad Street Tavern, Wokingham, on April 4, 2017. As a sample.Clear golden color, white head. Malty, though bitter and slight boozy taste. Bitter aftertaste. Malty, slight boozy scent. Medium thin mouthfeel, medium though sharp bitterness.

Bottle at home in Hackney- sourced via Ocado. Pours clear copper with a bubbly off-white head. The nose holds toasted brown bread, English yeast, some crackers, hay. Light-medium sweet with more toasted malts, faint toffee, suggestions of citrus, orange, melon, light bitterness. Light bodied with average carbonation. Nicely balanced finish, with more lightly toasted bread, semi-ripe citrus fruits, orange rind, British yeast. I find this really enjoyable.

Bottle from the brewer’s own stand at the Good Food Show at Birmingham NEC. Amber, thin and fizzy. Biscuitty malts and not much else. Very much the poor relation of the cask version- you’d hardly know it as the same beer. Still drinkable though, but the pasteurization has not done it any favours.
