Six different types of malt give this beer its rich and distinctive depth of flavour. Included in that monster mash bill is the deliciously sweet melanoidin malt which brings aromas of honey and biscuit, while three different varieties of rye grain produce deep flavours of nuts, spice and earthiness. Hops take a back seat to allow the complexity of our malt flavours shine through in this sessionable red ale.

Malts: Pale, Pale Rye, Cara Rye, Roast Rye, Melanoidinmalz & Munich.
Hops: Cascade, Willamette & Goldings.

A 33cl bottle at the Scran and Scallie. This was one of Barney’s better beers I felt. You get the spiciness from the rye which seems to make it taste a bit like a bitter. The body is a bit light but it’s fairly persistent and certainly drinkable.

Aroma: Strawberry, peach and lightly roasted malt.

Appearance: Hazy amber body with a thin off-white head. No visible carbonation. Light lacing.

Taste: Vegetables, biscuit, grain and a slightly metallic finish. A bit boring.

Palate: Thin body with a watery, slightly oily texture. Very light carbonation.

Overall: A bit wishy washy, no sharpness or complexity at all.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with airy white head. Clear aroma of grain and fruit. Bitter, hoppy taste, offset by some grainy sweetness. Bitter aftertaste. Watery and rather unbalanced. Not bad but could could be better.

Bottle, 4.5%. Hazy amber colour. Big stable creamy off-white head. The flavour has a rough bitterness and a sort of spicy note, but otherwise quite lagery. High carbonation, but OK mouthfeel.
