Pirate Life’s IIPA (Imperial India Pale Ale) brewed with Centennial, Zues, Mosaic and Simcoe comes in a 500ml can and comes on like a freight train, bursting with citrus aromas and belting you in the back palate with hop bitterness. Fortunately all that action is balanced by a strong hop base and what they call “fun juice”; that is, alcohol. The IIPA is 8.8 per cent alcohol by volume. It is a lot, but it adds an important rounding quality to the beer.

(Can) Pours cloudy amber with slight off-white head. Lovely pine and citrus aroma. Great palate - plenty of body with bright and fine carbonation give lively and velvety feel. Excellent taste, especially the big change through the palate. Starts off with tangy citrus fruitiness and pine over some gentle caramel sweetness, the fruitiness drops away through themid platate with hints if biscuity malt and then the hoppy bitterness comes to the fore and remains for a long time. The alcohol is well hidden but gives some nice bite. Excellent.

Can from Beer Zoo. Hazy golden/amber body with a medium off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of pine, caramel and grapefruit. Flavour of pine needles and mandarin. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Mouth-tinglingly hoppy and bitter. On a side note, the top of Pirate Life’s can designs, which detail the process and ingredients, are very cool.

slightly opalescent dark golden to orange colour, minimal creamy off-white head aroma and taste of pine resins, biscuits, tropical fruity notes, some floral honey and...and something what makes you fully aware that you are now drinking a BEER; great IIPA!
