English-style bitter with Douglas fir tips.

Our friend Jason went for a walk in the woods this past spring and came by the tasting room hoping to pay for his beer with a big old bag of fresh Douglas Fir tips. We’re not into rushing things here so we carefully freezer-aged the fir tips until we felt that they were frozen to perfection. We brewed up a nice old school bitter with UK malt and East Kent Goldings and we heaved in a ‘schwack of Jason’s fir tips. The resulting beer is infused with gentle, wholesome, foresty goodness. Thanks Jason!

Poured from the tap. Slightly hazy copper gold with small white head. Bready malt, just a hint of caramel, lots of fir and floral notes, comes across piney and a touch soapy. Decent.

Taster. Appearance: a bit hazy golden with a white head. Aroma: flowery hops, some herbals. Taste: pretty similar, very flowery, malty notes, noticeable hoppy bitterness. Overall: quite complex and good.

Okay brownish body and no head, soft bright biscuit on the nose. Flavour is smooth biscuit, refreshing at least though not interesting. Kind of middling.

Backlog, 2016. Light amber-brown. Thin head. Earthy caramelly nose. Mellow, balanced taste. Earthy with light caramel. Like a hoppier Brassneck Ale. Good, tasty pintable brew.

Draught at the brewery
Golden color, hazy, with medium sized head. Pleasant Golden Ale, with delicate malt flavor, moderately sweet, with a good amount of fruity esters, and correct bitterness. Good balance too.
I wouldn’t think of this as a Bitter, and I wouldn’t think of fir tips if it was not on the board.
Pleasant.

On tap at Brassneck, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is pretty restrained, with notes of English hops, light wood from the Douglas Fir, and some biscuity malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with notes of biscuity malt, a nice piney hopping and only a subtle hint of the Doug Fir. Clean and well-balanced. Works well. Not terribly exciting, but very drinkable.
