On tap at the Dieu du Ciel 14th anniversary party, pours a dark, dark amber with a large beige head. Aroma is quite smoky, with smoked roasted malt, but not too burnt or ashtray-like. Flavour is moderate smoky, with lots of smoked malt and loads of caramel malt to balance and take out the smokiness. A lot more moderate in the smoke character than many of this style, with a lot more caramel malts. This is certainly a good thing in my books, making this quite drinkable.

The 1st of my 3 DDC brews at blind tiger this Saturday of which I drank in reverse appropriate order. Nose rich and smoky and it’s a deep dark pour. Tastes of caramel, earth, pine, and lots of smokey bacon flavor. Slightly warming on finish. Really good

From tap at the brewpub. Pours clear and golden amber to deep hazlenut brown with a small off-white and lacing head. Aroma is dense smoked and meaty. Ham and burned wood. Meaty and lingering smoked. Nice and mellow. Smooth smoked and roasted malty finish.

Aroma is heavy smoked malts. Has an amber body with small beige head. Flavour is heavy smoked wood but tasty, overpowering as the best smoked beers but not disgusting. Medium finish. It’s a good beer for the style, but still rather simplified.

A translucent reddish amber ale with a thin off white head. A sharp aroma of burned wood, fusel alcohol, and burned caramel. In mouth, a good malt with loads of burned wood, smoke extract, smoked ham, light acidic points and nice hops. Intense in mouth, not for the faint of heart. On tap at brewpub Oct. 31 2009.
