Bottle from Geers. Hazy golden, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of ripe, almost cooked apple, pear, banana, bubblegum, mint-flavoured candy, clove, ripe strawberry, jenever, honey, apricot jam, marmalade. Taste has very sweet cooked apple, pear, apricot & banana (bubblegum almost) mixed together in a sugary cereally, white-bready, honeyish maltiness; surrounded by toothpaste-like & phenolic spiciness. Floral hoppy finish with more ripe yellow fruits, sugar, bitter herbs & 'sweet' mint and a firm dash of boozy white rum-like alcohol. Medium body, sticky texture, soft carbonation. Completely lacking structure, sweetness & bitterness going in every direction. Very odd that the Calvados version was so much better - to me, at least.

Goudkleurig vrij helder bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is warm, krachtig en bitterzoet met iets van appel, jeneverbes, wat zoete snoepjes en banaan. Valt me ietwat tegen, had er meer van verwacht.

Super strong tripel by Het Nest, the base beer in this case, used for a number of barrel aged variants. Thick, eggshell-white, moussy head thinning and opening, leaving shreds of foam over a misty deep golden beer with ‘metallic’ pale orangey tinge. Aroma of candy apple, wodka and even methylated spirits, sugared bubblegum, banana, melting powder sugar, starch, gin, juniper berries, honey and phenolic notes of peppermint and even tooth paste lurking in the background. Very sweet, sugary onset, tooth-cloying in fact, with fruity notes of cooked pear and ripe banana, medium carbonated with rounded, slick body – but clearly thinned by alcohol. Sleek cereally maltiness under a blanket of residual ‘white’ sugariness, until suddenly a severe, quinine-like, very rooty and long-lasting bitterness takes over, very strongly amplified by a huge gin-like booziness warming the back of the mouth, as expected; this ‘armwrestling’ contest of extreme sugariness, extreme bitterness and extreme booziness goes on for a while, but leaves no room for finesse at all. This is about the crudest top-fermenting beer I ever had – I can only compare its crudeness, ‘barrenness’ and booziness with some of the worst malt liquors and Euro strong lagers I had in the past, but without the metallic and plastic-like ‘industrialness’ of those. This is almost a parody of the Belgian ‘sweet and boozy tripel’ stereotype – an unforgiving magnification seeking to roll its muscles and impress, but dramatically lacking in good taste, refinement and complexity. A complete abomination in my view, even the barrel aged versions of this beer are (a bit) less crude, strangely…

Fles geprobeerd met Roelzie1986. Het is een goudgeel bier met een volle witte schuimkraag. Het heeft een zoete wat moutige geur. De smaak is moutig, alcohol achtig met een wat honing achtige afdronk.

9/X/20 - 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte), shared @ home, BB: III/2022 (2020-965)

Clear gold to orange beer, big irregular off-white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very malty, grains, banana, bit sweet, some caramel, little oxidized, bit herbal. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty chemical, lots of overripe banana, paint thinner, sugary and sweet and cloying. Aftertaste: more banana peel, unpleasant bitterness, way too sweet and sugary, lots of phenols, don’t like it at all. It’s like a sugar bomb with chemical phenols. Meh.
