This is what your granddad used to drink, but don’t let that put you off for a second. They knew a thing or two in those days. Sometimes you want those dark, malty flavours, but not by the pint. And sometimes those bitter, fruity beers seem like they’re lacking. Here is your answer. A traditional blend of bitter and mild. Infinitely drinkable. Not just for flat caps!

Old Fountain. Cask. Hazy deep amber beer, decent cream colour head. Palate is smooth and dry, decent fine carbonation. Clean dry malts bring very mild caramel. A little spice and a touch of dried fruits. Modest bubblegum esters. Light dry finish. Okay.

Cask-conditioned at the Bag O’Nails, Bristol 18/04/10. Chocolate brown with a hint of red and decent tan head. Sweet, malty aroma of caramel and red fruit, with a hint of chocolate and grassy hop. Flavour was similarly sweet to begin with, before a lingering bitter finish. Very drinkable.
