Cerveza Negra has roasted malty notes which extends to its taste. It is full-flavored and full bodied. Bitterness is moderate but still smooth.

Bottle from Bert’s labeled Cerveza Negra Pours a solid dark brown with clear ruby highlights at the edges and a huge creamy off white head that takes forever to dissipate. Aromas of molasses overwhelm me as soon as I get beer to meet glass. Hints of smoke, roast, and chocolate round out the aroma, but my God this smells like sugary unfermented molasses mostly. Wow the flavor does not stray from the aroma much. Sweet brown sugar and molasses run the show here. Light prunes and plums in the flavor as well and little to counter the malty or adjuct-y sweetness in this beer. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet thick sugary syrupy mouthfeel. I have no way to tell how old this bottle is but I suspect it may be less than fresh. That said the burnt sugar and molasses seem to be all this beer offers, it reminds me more of the barley malt sodas that I had in the Caribbean than actual beer.

11.2oz bottle. Unfiltered looking brown-black body. Thin, oily, beige head. Sweet, sugary caramel and brown chocolate tones, certainly more along the lines of a Dunkel than a Vienna. A pretty straightforward Dunkel, not so bad, bet it tastes quite nice on a beach in the Philippines. Medium bodied, easy drinking, a touch sugary and one dimensional. OK, and a little better than most people presume.

330 mL bottle. Dark brown, with a little ruby notes and a small, tan head. The aroma is heavy caramel, pine, peat, and a little black bread. Roasted sweetness up front, with a mellow sour and bitter finish. Medium body, sticky and a little acidic. Overall, this beer has a surprisingly complex nose, but the palate is weak. Not bad, though.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Brown-colored. Aroma of caramel, sugary malt and a light toasty note. Slightly overly sweet caramelly flavor with some cardboard. Light-bodied.

Total Wine, Chantilly ($1.50ish): Pours a rather dark brownish color with a little brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, grain, and something else, which I have trouble explaining, but that is present in a number of beers. Somebody said medicinal... I think that might be it. Artificial fruit maybe (natural maybe, but one I am not familiar with?)... I don’t know. In any case, it wasn’t half bad. The beer has plenty of flavor and absolutely nothing negative about it. Not the most complex thing in the world, but refreshing and flavourful. A pleasant surprise.

Bottle courtesy of Beerandblues3 at the Baltimore Irish Chanukah tasting, 3/17/12. Pours a clear dark reddish brown color with a large tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of Aroma of roasted and leafy hops. The taste is chocolate, grainy malts, leafy hops. Medium bodied. Is it wrong that I like this?

bottle pours dark brown with a rocky tan head that laces well. Aroma is sweet roast, a little chalky with thin fruity yeast notes. Flavor is light roast, coffee and a bit metallic in the finish but not bad.

12 oz bottle for $2.99 at Table and Vine, West Springfield, MA. Dark brown Cola-color, small beige head. A strange smell. Taste is caramel malt, light sourness and a touch of molasses. I don’t get any bitterness. Medium body. Not that bad at all for a dark lager. OK, to try.
