Feel the sea spray on your face and prepare to hang tough.
Escape from the West Coast is a resinous journey down the California coast. Citra & Centennial hops are fresh and piney, with a bitter finish and a perceptible hint of dank.
The label is an homage both to 60s surf movies and horror movies of the same era. Think Gidget of the Black Lagoon. Pressure Drop founder Sam was inspired by B-movie credits as a label concept. This prompted Sienna to find some iconic snaps from her travels in and around Big Sur, and use her magic to create a label that is equal parts “I’m coming to get you Barbara” and “They only live to get radical”.

Can. Near clear orange gold beer, small bubbly pale cream colour head. Light and fairly smooth start to the palate, the back end is semi dry with good fine minerally carbonation emerging. Thinnish pale malts, mild sweet. The hops bring West Coast marmalade, a little brighter citrus underneath. The back end shows a touch of Luminosa lemonade which, seriously pulls this brews arse out of the fire. Other than the Luminosa angle, I have to wonder how determined this escape attempt from the West Coast was. Not very, from my perspective!

Can from House Of Trembling Madness. Clear deep golden body with a loose off-white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of pine, honey and lemon. Flavour of watermelon and orange. Medium body with a slick, oily mouthfeel. Light fizz. This is really good. I’d love to see more high ABV west coast IPAs like this from Pressure Drop.

On tap at The Rusty Bucket, Eltham. Light hazy golden orange pour with a white head. Piney, tropical fruit & bitter citrus nose. Flavours of grapefruit, mango, white grape, kiwifruit. Hoppy, piney booze laden finish. A fine WCPA.

Can from Cotteridge Wines; hazy amber pour with a bubbly white head, aroma has minerals and some pine, taste has pineapple, some spice, slight grassy action, some harsh bitterness.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up at the Experiment. Pours lightly unclear honey-gold, effervescent, with a frothy, mostly white head. Directionally I get where they're heading, but they didn't quite make it. A bit too dry, somewhat harsh in its bitterness, a bit flinty. Doesn't have enough resinous pine, ripening citrus and melon, hearty tropical fruits. Fairly sweet but not sugary, has a strong alcohol kick. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish with a touch of resin, more grassy bitterness, flinty minerality. It hits the right notes at times, then loses its place. Overall, not bad.

Keg at the experiment. A hazed deep orange amber coloured pour with a tidy off white froth. Aroma is weird big grassy hop, sileage, weed, grass, brambles. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, some character malts, big cut grass, sileage, piney hop,. Aggressive piney, graas, bitterness. Super fresh green hop. Palate is semi sweet, spicy, piney resin, highish carbonation. Lingering varnish. And grass.
