First brewed in 1950, our malty award-winning Moonraker is dedicated to a local legend. The story goes that farmers close to the JW Lees brewery once fell into a pond, attempting to rake out a reflection of the moon they mistook for a truckle of fine Lancashire cheese. This strong ale should be handled with care, but its fruity aroma and rich, sweet flavour are now the stuff of legends too.

Bottle thanks to Theydon_bois cheers Colin; hazy dark chestnut brown pour with frothy tan head, sweet caramel aroma, taste has plums and dried fruit quite boozy tasting, a hint of wood and autumn leaves.

Bottle at home, 23/02/13. Extremely dark mahogony brown come light black with a well appointed tan covering. Nose is tobacco, toffee fudge, cake mix, light cocoa, earthy tones. Taste comprises dark toffee, tea leaves, musty tones, light cocoa powder Medium bodied with a little oomph, sof t carbonation, semi drying close. Ok drop, good level of depth, light booze, fairly easy drinker for the ABV.

Mild oak notes. Clear cola colored, medium tan head, good lacing. Very oaky, walnut flavor, subtly sweet and bitter. Hints of marzipan and nougat. Vanilla overtones, which become very pronounced in the finish. Elegant.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol, November 2012. Dark brown with a decent, off-white head. Sweet, chocolate, molasses and liquorice aroma. Flavour had bready malts, a hint of roast, prunes, more chocolate and a moderately bitter finish. Good.

Crosse Keys, Bank 5 Nov 12. JDW festivaløl. Ekstremt dyp brun. Egentlig svart. Raskt utflatende skum. God søt plommearoma. Myk munnfølelse. God syrlig plommesmak med litt sviske & sherrypreg. Tørr fruktig ettersmak.

Cask at the Claude du Vall (JDW), Camberley. Deep chocolate brown with a cherry red glow and a tight tan head; sour fruity aroma; thick and syrupy in the mouth, with rich nutty malts and some sour fruit and milk chocolate; the finish is dry and woody, with soem caramel that just masks the alcohol.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours clear, red-brown wih a fine, tan cream head. Nose is mostly dark fruits, some dark bread and light alcohol. Medium sweet flavour with lightly roasted malts, dark fruits, burnt sugars, dark berries, a bit of booze, some dark toasted bread. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Mild warmth to finish with lightly charred malts, burnt sugars, overripe berries, raisins, dirt. It’s OK stuff, but you can easily do a lot more at this ABV.

500ml bottle - Pours a rich mahogany, head is a thick tan and of considerable duration with some lacing. Aroma of caramel and dark fruit. The flavour is a sublte combination of malted roastness and the sweetness of dark fruit, and has a rich feel to the palate and aftertase. Really good, and a good one for Autumn (Fall) too.

A clear dark amber ale with a thin lacing mocha head. In aroma, a smooth vinous malt with light corky notes, light vanilla and bourbon, nice. In mouth, a rather strange sweet fruity and sour ale with light wild yeast, Brett notes, cork, cherries, interesting. On tap at Sunset Grill, July 15, 2012.
