A long way from Deutschland, our German brewers have taken inspiration from their home to produce this archetypal Schwarzbier. A black lager, light in body, dark in colour and roasty in flavour. Germany has a rich brewing heritage and this is (one of) their Native Tastes.

Tap at Mad Squirrel, High Wycombe. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a mostly lasting frothy off white head. The aroma is light roasty malt, nutty caramel, light medicinal. The flavour is moderate sweet, light liqourice bitter, with a smooth, rich, dry roasty, light sweet floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Keg at Mad Squirrel, Wycombe. Black with a beige head and a middling fizz. Chocolate, coffee, brown bread and a toasty maltiness. Not a lot of hop presence but very, very drinkable. Good stuff.

Keg at Mad Squirrel Amersham, 11/01/20. Light black with a decent tan cap. Nose is dried fruits, light ashen buzz, cocoa sprinkle, toffee, brown bread. Taste comprises raisins, cocoa powder, cake mix, hint god brown sugar, toffee, light scorch. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid for the style ... good depth of flavour ... not the brown water you sometime get!
