Tripel with whisky malt to achieve a smoky effect (hence the name), a creation of Lars Wagemans of the Molder brand (‘bierfirma’ Molana); he also happens to be a teacher at the Sint-Paulus school in Mol, and apparently the profits made by selling this beer will be invested in teaching equipment for the school. Like several other ‘bierfirma’s’, beer makers without a brewery, he turned to brand new BeerSelect in Ghent to do the job – I have a feeling this BeerSelect thing may be on to something… Anyway: egg-white, mousy, more or less stable head lacing in dots over a hazy peach blonde beer with pale orange hue. Aroma of smoked fruit (like Alvinne did) rather than actual smoked malts, moist cigarette tobacco, banana, apple sauce, white bread, gin and a strong floral presence of gale (effectively used, and historically a common ingredient in beer). Fruity onset, banana and pineapple esters, hint of ripe pear, fizzy carbonation, smooth bready maltiness with a thin layer of honeyish residual sugar on top, light smoky accent towards the finish but again more smoked fruit-like than the smoked bacon effect I was hoping for. This somewhat weird combo of sweet fruitiness and smokiness dominates the finish, while soft floral-spicy gale returns and a gin-like, eventually somewhat astringent alcohol glow rounds things off. Unusual especially for a classically Belgian-oriented and ‘quiet’ brand like Molder, technically quite well executed like most things that come out of BeerSelect these days, this is a fairly interesting one indeed – and much more a success than Clair de Lune, a similar beer also brewed at BeerSelect, but coming from Mechelen rather than Mol (see that entry for more details).

1/II/20 - 33cl bottle @ nieuwjaarsreceptie Gentse Biervereniging, BB: 2/XII/22 (2020-104) Thanks to everyone for sharing all today’s beers!

Clear gold blond beer, big creamy solid and slightly irregular white head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: some orange peel, sugary impression, chlorine, bit chemical, some banana peel and ripe banana. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, yeasty, banana, little bitter, somewhat metallic, banana peel, more sweet and sugary notes. Aftertaste: bit chemical, yeasty, spicy, sugary, some banana, oxidized, some almonds, Amaretto, unimpressive. Where’s the fire?
