The first in a very special series of beers brewed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Abbeydale Brewery. Generously hopped to provide a burst of freshness, which is balanced by a rich, dried fruit character reminiscent of figs, cranberries and dark raisins.

Keg at the Hanging Bat. Pours clear amber with a thin beige head. Funky, brett nose, somewhat overwhelming the base brown ale. Taste is funky, but some fruity sweetness is there at the back. Not bad.

Bottle. Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Clear, deep, coppery red. Swirl of beige head. Doesn’t look how I expected, somehow. Anyway, nose has the promised fig, in spades. Sweet date. Toasty malts. Milk chocolate. Background hoppage, by way of ripe peach and minty herb. Taste is soft, fruity sweet, turning robust, fruity, hop tea bitter. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Lightly oily. Long, fruity hop bitter finish. It’s ages since I had Brimstone, and I’ve never rated it, but it was always one of Abbeydale’s more interesting beers, and this is a sterling job at pumping it up. Definitely a grower, this, that comes together well.

750ml bottle from Beer Central, Sheffield - Hazy amber body, thin bubbly white head. Nose is ripe figs, cake fruit and a bit of caramel, with a subtle bit of citrus at the back. Taste is sharp and bitter, with a warming booziness on the back of the throat. Decent stuff.
