500 ml bottle into lager glass, best before 10/3/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of cocoa, coffee, toast, toffee, brown bread, light nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good complexity and solid balance of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and moderate dark fruit notes; with solid strength. A bit too fruity in the nose, but not bad. Taste of cocoa, coffee, toast, toffee, dark bread, light nuttiness, herbal, slight fruitiness, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Slight herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cocoa, coffee, toast, toffee, dark bread, light nuttiness, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Nice and clean flavors with minimal yeast esters present in the taste. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very good schwarzbier style. All around good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Typical Leikeim 0,5 l swing top bottle. Nearly black in the glass, medium light tanned head. Low malty on the nose. Starts roastmalty, light sourness. Caramell in the background. Boring and not really enjoyable.

Swingtop from Ledgers. Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma suggests chocolate malt. Med body, more or less. Main flavor is chocolate. There’ a little coffee following, and it seems to have a hint of tartness. Finishes a bit lightly astringent? No. A little earthy. Maybe. Leaves what I like to call a grutchy feeling. This would be very sessionable.

From a flip top. Nice big dark pour with with a pretty big head that goes thi and rocky. Smell is a tad cabbagey but not bad. Has a tad of a metallic hint to it on the taste buds but it is a rather well behaved mild enjoyable beer. Goes down fairly easy. Decent co2. Rather creamy at that. No real ill effects on the finish. At the end it does have some of that burnt shcwartz effect that I really like. Almost comes across like a very dark lager or porter. Yes, very like able. Enjoyable beer session.

Flip-top, half-litre: best before 20 May 2013, poured into my Wolnzacher Brauhaus glass tankard on 25 Nov 2012. Fine looking brew: deep ruby red in colour witha good foaming biege head. Weak nose: malty notes with hints of a UK Mild sort of smell. The taste was also on the malty side with slight coffee and dark chocolate flavours, but overall it is watery and lacks true character or depth of anything. Like a lot of the dark lagers I’ve had: not really enjoyed the experience. They rarely live up to their looks or produce the ’umph’ they initially promise.
