Some of the oak casks at Samuel Smith’s date back more than a century with the individual oak staves being replaced by the Old Brewery coopers over the years. Gradually the casks soak in more & more of the character of the ale fermented in stone Yorkshire squares. Yorkshire Stingo is aged for at least a year, matured in these well-used oak casks in the brewery’s underground cellars deriving fruit, raisin, treacle toffee, Christmas pudding and slight oaky flavours, before being further naturally conditioned in bottle.

Releases: 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016. Please note: Stingo has the year brewed on the back label. Due to barrel aging & bottle-conditioning, the release year is one year after the year brewed.

Poured from 550mL bottle (bb 31 Jul 28). Lightly hazed amber orange with small light beige head. Soft woody fig and toffee apple with feint honey, seems like there's some feint dry brett character in there, comes together really nicely.

Amber brown pour. Not much head. Caramel, toffee rum raisins and oak and vanilla. Pretty thin mouthful.

Bought on-line, drank at home. A decent pint, definitely one to be sipped slowly on a long winter night.
