Some of the oak casks at Samuel Smith’s date back more than a century with the individual oak staves being replaced by the Old Brewery coopers over the years. Gradually the casks soak in more & more of the character of the ale fermented in stone Yorkshire squares. Yorkshire Stingo is aged for at least a year, matured in these well-used oak casks in the brewery’s underground cellars deriving fruit, raisin, treacle toffee, Christmas pudding and slight oaky flavours, before being further naturally conditioned in bottle.

Releases: 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016. Please note: Stingo has the year brewed on the back label. Due to barrel aging & bottle-conditioning, the release year is one year after the year brewed.

550ml bottle: BB June 2025. A present from my mate Ant and shared with a cousin (Bob) on 28th August 2023. Hard to believe I've never had this iconic beer before. Body is almost Teak red, solid beige crown that sadly died away a bit too swiftly for my liking. Malty front, back and sides, dried fruits and slightly 'twiggy' towards the finish. Interesting and moreish.

Bottle. Brown, bit amber. Raisins, wood, vanilla, christmas pudding, booze. Taste is beautifully balanced, marmite oily. Surprisingly light. Perfect with christmas cookies; would be even better if we had a fireplace.

Bottle, BB Jan2019. Fruity/jammy wooden, old cheese nose. Hazy mahagony, low amber cream. Medium full dry wooden. preserved fruit, marmite, Certainly aged, but the oxidized notes are harmonic with the rest. Lovely.

Bottle, BB January 2019 (according to the German import label). Unclear deep amber color with grey head. Aroma is old sticky pinecones, pretty intense, yeah this is old, but christmas pudding and raisins too. Taste is not as old, nice sticky toffee and fruitiness, christmas pudding, a dash of marmite, solid bitterness too, lovely balance. Chewy, medium carbonation. Nice one!

Nice english beer. Not as clean as I’d like from the superior clear red hue. Tastes english, in the good ways, but also some of the bad. Bierkonig ams
