Anchor Saison is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Trader Joe’s. Aroma is nice fruity esters and bubblegum. Appearance is clear, beautiful amber orange with nice sparkle, ephemeral white fizzy head and no lacing. Taste is like the fruity ester/bubblegum aroma but also with something like allspice or cinnamon or nutmeg (from the saison-style yeast? the lemon and ginger?) you’d find in a winter warmer. Palate is medium bodied with thin texture, lively carbonation, spicy pepper, lightly tart finish, and slight warming sensation in stomach. Overall,

Nice tasty and refreshing ale.
Unclear yellow golden color with a nice white head. Lovely aroma. Medium body and a fine carbonation. Good balance between sweetness and acidity. Semi dry texture. Citric, yeast, fruity and some spiced notes in the flavor.

Flaska från SB. Bärnstensfärgad, klar med lågt krämigt skum. Lätt doft av belgisk jäst, citronskal. Stor kropp. Nej

Bottle (Beer Hunters). Clear copper color, medium-sized creamy white head. Aroma has sweetish banana, Saison yeast but quite light pepperness. Light-bodied to medium-bodied. Flavor has banana-bubblegum, citric hoppyness. Fruity and sweet Saison with (too) clean palate. Feels too filtered.

At Craft Bier Fest, Wien. Pours cloudy orange with small white head. Fruity, bit yeasty, spicy. Decent, but too light for my taste, lacks body and more flavor.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Clear amber, small head. Discrete aroma of honey, marzipan and ginger. Mid sweet with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Fruity with some herbal spices, notes of marzipan and warming gingery finish. Given Anchor’s track record I was expecting more. This is more modern and less soulful than I was hoping.
