This Zenne y Frontera is a blend of ten different sherry barrels - nine Oloroso barrels and one Amontillado barrel. The Oloroso barrels were more than fourty years old. We filled these with young lambic from four different brews and some with four month-old lambic wort. The weighted average age upon bottling was 21 months. 100% 3 Fonteinen.

Bottle thanks to Anthony. Pours a hazy orange gold with small white head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is strong funk, barnyard, sherry, oak, apple skin. Slick body, apple skin, oak, sherry, funk, nice tartness, really enjoyed this.

Sour and tart. Barrel, sherry, funk, some stone fruits. Fairly dry, but also a bit sweet. Excellent.

The eighth of in total eleven batches of this sherry-themed and meanwhile legendary lambic series by 3 Fonteinen, blended from lambics hat have aged on sherry barrels, in this case a total of nine oloroso barrels and one amontillado barrel. Bottle from the Lambik-O-Droom, shared with Craftmember. Thinnish, egg-white head, open with flat ‘veils’ in the middle but in the end dissolving, on a hazy warm orangey-tinged peach blonde robe. Aroma of dry haystacks, grass silage, green apple, grape skin, indeed a background whiff of oloroso, toasted sunflower seeds, cucumber, dry old wood, dried lemon peel, unripe walnuts, mandarin touch, bitter garden weeds, even very faint goat stable and farmland in late summer. Crisp, sour onset, green apple-, raw sorrel- and redcurrant-like, lively and pleasant acidity, fizzy carbonation, cava-like and accentuating the astringent sourness; supple bread-crusty and toasted-seed-like, dry-wheaty base supporting this ongoing soft astringency and lactic tartness, with lots of ‘green’ fruitiness and increasing woody tannin effects; funky farmland accents in the end but subtly and elegantly so, with a minerally undercurrent and fruity yet bone dry ending, where first a dandelion-like hop bitter touch shows up (very late in the process) and only then, in the very end, a volatile sweet sherry accent that fades as quickly and unexpectedly as it came. The sherry is quite subtle here, as is the case in blends 92 and – to a slightly lesser extent – 94, but that obviously does not change the fact that this is a masterfully blended geuze of unmistakable 3 Fonteinen character. The loveliness of this Zenne y Frontera series goes on and on.

Bottle, bottling date 24-07-2019, 6.7%. Color: Orange golden to amber, fast disappearing thin white head. Aroma: Hay, fruity, wood, some funk. Taste: Over moderate tart, fruity notes of unripe berries and grapes, citrus. Wood and quite some tannins. Wild yeast funk. Minerals. Some vinegar. Very subtle Sherry, some hints mostly at the finish. Medium body, soft carbonation. Dry mouthfeel, especially at the finish. Light to moderate sweetness. Getting more balanced and complex, with also a little more Sherry flavors and sweetness, when standing longer and opening up after some rolling. Nice, although I expected a litle more flavors from the Sherry barrels.

26-09-20 // Happy Zwanze Day 2020 at Mon Petit Café, Stuttgart. Bottle, shared. Thanks! More sourness than 92. more funk. More lambiclike. Less sherry influence. Sharper. Good.

Pours darker blonde. Small white head. Smell is full, milder sherry than 96 . Oloroso, but far less clear. Taste is full, sharp, citrussy, mild acetic. Decent, but not on par with some of the other versions.
