At the request of the “Foundation Abbey, Town and Region” and the Town of Sint-Truiden, a special abbey beer was brewed on the occasion of the first open abbey days in 2002. What makes Adelardus Dubbel so special, is the use of so-called ‘gruut’. This is a mixture of about 10 different indigenous herbs. Further five types of malts and two types of Belgian hops are used. Adelardus Dubbel is a dark brown high fermentation beer, that is unfiltered, unpasteurized with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Adelardus Dubbel has a full taste with a very soft, spicy nose and a slightly bitter aftertaste.

The dark abbey beer from this charming Limburg brewery, spiced with sweet gale, in rememberance of an ancient tradition, before the generalisation of hops. Light beige, mousse-like, regular, stable head, dark mahogany brown with a ruby hue; malty aroma with iron (perhaps a foam stabilising agent?) but also banana, raisins, yeast, black pepper, orange peel, gentle spice from the gale; malty and fruity taste in which the iron returns, as well as the subtle spicing, finish rather short, a bit monotonous in all.

Bottle sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks Stas. Hazy brown with a beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, cardboard, candies, cough syrup and dark fruits. Sweet flavor, candy-ish, with sugar, cough syrup, some dark fruits, some spice and cardboard. Medium-bodied.

11/IV/14 - 33cl bottle from Willems (Grobbendonk) @ home - BB: X/2014 (2014-362)

Clear deep red purple to red brown beer, big aery beige head, unstable, dissipates quickly, non adhesive. Aroma: soapy and floral, reminds me very much of St. Paul Double. Some citrus and coriander notes as well. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: wow, overload of floral flavours, like drinking a pot pourri, and no that's not a good thing. Lots of orange peel, pretty sweet and sugary, some caramel, but mainly just very very floral, reminding me of Turkish delight, which is also floral and very sugary sweet. Aftertaste: more of the same, very sweet, sugary, floral, pot pourri, Turkish delight. Did not finish. Cooked with it instead.
