BD 15/06/2020, BB 15/06/2023, Batch 165, 330ml bottle;
APPEARANCE: deep dark brown to black color with some ruby hues at the bottom of the glass; very quickly dissipating coffee brown like head into a few lonely islands
AROMA: mild amount of coconut at the opening but fades rather quickly in the glass, medium sweetness of toasted sugars, dark caramel, dried dark fruits like dates, figs & prunes, toasted bread crust and hints of sweet oatmeal cookie, melting chocolate, hints of caramelized onions, vanilla, subtle beef stock, soft spicy rye whiskey & wood, no sign of coffee on the nose, gentle spicy alcohol but otherwise remarkably well hidden for 13%
TASTE: very low carbonation, medium body to medium plus, quite thin mouthfeel even for BA treatment, moderate silky and oily texture, alcohol is nicely hidden (no heat); first of all, where is the coconut? Just very subtle echo at the exhale; medium sweet onset mainly from toasted sugars, brown and caramel candy, a touch of butterscotch, bread crust, sweet chocolate, mellow spicy rye whiskey, faint smoke, minerals, savory note, hints of stewed mushrooms, very subtle iron, dried dark fruits & red fruits candy, lack of coffee - just retronasal presence, mild tartness, surprisingly easy drinkable for abv, no detection of roasted malts and bitterness
OVERALL: I’m not impressed with the outcome; feels more like a Baltic (Imperial) Porter than IS with adjuncts; coconut and coffee are very restrained and subtle, barrel character is present but that's all; bottle and draft versions of regular Cocobänger (before they increase production in a new brewery) are much more better than this BA version;

Bottle at home, black beer, small head. Aroma is coffee, coconut, malt, vanilla, oak, liquorice, dark ripe fruit, hint of raisins. Taste is the same with some whisky, bitter, light sweet, long dry aftertaste, very very nice.

0,33l bottle at home. BB . black color, very small dark coffee colored head. smells coconut, bit rummy, vanilla, whisky, toasty, earthy, spices. nice to very nice smell. full body, light carbonation. tastes coconut, toasted wood, vanilla, light oxidation, bit medical, some whisky. finishes dry and lightly bitter with notes of toasted wood, whisky and vanilla notes. Nice one, but I think I actually prefer the regular version (which is a bit surprising). The coconut flavours with the Rye Whisky actually dont work that great, the coconut tastes a bit artifical, and the rye whisky makes it boozy. Not bad at all, but starting from the base beer (which I really liked), I expected quite a bit more.

Bottle at home, 5th November 2020, always like a banger on Bonfire Night. This pours black and thick. Aroma is soy, dark chocolate and booze. Taste is full and complex, coffee, chocolate and booze, plus barrel, rich, dark fruit, not much coconut. I think the original coco banger had the edge

As always with these the enjoyment was preceded by a battle with the thick plastic like “wax”, blunting my kitchen knife and risking serious injury. When I eventually got a pour of the beer it was near black with a tiny and quickly disappearing brown head. Things are getting pretty good now, bourbon jumps out on the nose with oak, booze, vanilla, strong (but not artificial) coconut from the base beer, dark chocolate, rich brownies, more booze, coffee and rich caramel. Though there’s boozy fumes in the aroma, it’s not in an unpleasant way that ruins the beer. Flavour is heavy sweet and bitter. Not heavy sweet in a badly made pastry stout way. In a classic balanced way. The texture is probably thinned a little from the barrel, but it’s still fairly full bodied with a certain chewiness, alcohol warmth and soft carbonation keeping things lively. Another great beer from Pohjala. Love what they do, apart from that horrible plastic wax!
