Bottle, Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Dark amber pour with a small off white head. Spice, caramel malts and fruits present in the beak. The flavour was pretty booze heavy with malts, yeast, wood and leather in attendance alongside some bitterness. Fair enough but not smashing it out the park.

Bottle split with Kenny in the special surprise room tasting, Amsterdam Inntel pre Borefts livener, 25/09/14. Hazed chestnut brown with a good sized beige covering that retains well. Nose is dark fruits, toffee, light medicianls, spice, malty notes. Taste comprises light smoke, spice, more medicinal tunes, dark fruit rinds, dates. Medium bodied, spritzy and overcarbed, light booze in the close. Very average for style, doesn’t drink to 10% but also doesn’t deliver for that ABV!

33 cl bottle @ home (bought @ the brewery). Deep ruby brown color, mostly clear. Light beige wobbly head with fairly long retention and some lacing. Aroma’s: sweet malts, a bit toffee-ish, some smoke, some red fruit, notes of wood. Retronasal I get sweet malts, red fruit, some smoke and some wood-notes. Moderate sweet flavor, rather IJ-ish, some woody dryness, some fruit. Alcohol feel is quite strong and warming. Medium bodied. Finish is moderate bitter, lightly dry. Maybe not a true barley wine and not entirely balanced, but I still enjoyed it.

Directly after the sip, the beer is flat, but then the flavor kicks in. Raisin, oak, vanilla and some candi. Yeasty as always.

Bottled from Biernavigatie, Nr. 143 BB 01/2015, large sample, served in a snifter. Pours an initially clear copper colored beer with a big off-white head, leaving smooth lacing. Aroma is slight smoked, oak wood, dried fruit, some caramel and raisin, slight spiciness. Bit bitter in taste, slight sweet as well, bit dry wood. Alcohol and wood together with the fairly high carbonation give it a bit of sharpness. Finish again has some caramelly sweetness with a slight alcoholic bite, leaving a soft burn. Oak chips give it that bit of extra power and is nicely balanced with the rest of the beer. I would like to see it mellow out a bit more though. Its not as thick or sirupy as it could be, but goes more towards a La Trappe Quadrupel kind of barleywine instead of an american type of barleywine. Ok sipper.

Dark mahogany brown. Light woodiness in the aroma. Flavour has a good balance of dryness from the oak chips and malty caramel sweetness. Warming alcoholic burn in the finish.
