For the 100th anniversary of the brewery in 1989, the steam beer was originally brewed according to the traditional recipes of the Wolfgang Pfeffer, the founder of the brewery. Since then it has been ripening in the old, deep rock cellars.
The fermentation with top-fermenting yeast ran quickly in wooden, open vats at temperatures of 18-20 ° C. This led to a violent, rapid carbonation, which caused large gas bubbles on the "ceiling" (foam above the liquid). These burst from time to time, giving the impression that "the beer is steaming". The name "steam beer" was born!

Bottle 500ml. w. swing top @ home on the terrace.[ Courtesy of HDer ]. Clear medium to dark amber colour with a large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted - caramel, sweet malt, fruity. Flavour is moderate to light heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration, sweet malt, nutty notes, light spicy hops. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Na Sumavé, Prague. Üdítő volt a gyümölcsössége a száraz pilsek között. Frissítő. Karamell. Jó hely lehet ez a Sumave.

(Bottle at One Pint Pub) Poured golden and almost clear. Head was medium sized and white. Aroma contained malts, candy sugar and very mildly sourness. Palate was medium bodied and bit dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, hint of chocolate, roastedness, mildy tartness and mild bitterness. Aftertaste was tart and mildly bitter.

Clear deep amber color, good cloudy beige head. Aroma is very metallic and has herbal (oregano) hoppyness and wet woody notes (pencil, cellar). Light to medium bodied, crisp carbonation. Flavor is quite similar to aroma: iron, some caramel, wood and herbal hoppyness - hard mouthfeel. It is nice to have a traditional beer style, Dampfbier, but I can’t say that I would like to have it again.

Bottled@Monks Cafe Sveavägen, Stockholm. Ambery golden colour, small off-white head. Sweet malts as well as some bready malts along with some herbal and earthy notes. Flavour is quite much the same along with some wooden and toffeeish notes.

Swing-top bottle. Sweet caramel malt and tart cherry aroma. Slightly hazy copper color with small head. Sweet caramel malt evenly blended with a dry cherry flavor. Unique - somewhat like a mix between a dunkel and a bock.

swing top bottle (500ml). -Dark(er) amber coloured, medium sized off-white head, dry dusty nose with touch of malt. Sweet malty, slight hoppy and salty with notes of honey. So far ok, but unfortunately totally empty and tasteless finish.

On tap at Bräustüberl Zwiesel. Coppery-amber body, off-white, thick head. Bit herbal, minerally, lightly softly malty, caramelly taste. Bit soft bubblegummy, caramelly taste, some cherry touches, lightly herbal, low bitterness. Delectable! So much better than the bottled versions I had!
2009 bottled rating:
Bottle courtesy of and shared with ogivlado who found it in Wien (thanks!) Poured an orange-brown body with a bigger than average persistent off white head. Slightly salty noste, pollen and dust, some sweet maltiness. Humm. The taste... sweet honeyish maltiness, some light salt near the end. Mild caramel drops, light soap. Empty aftertaste. Somehow fresh, refreshing but overall just lacking something.

ambrata buona schiuma piuttosto persistente note leggermente fruttate un po legnose leggero formaggio in bocca leggere lievi tostature caramello non molto amara un tocco di fruttato banana
