For the 100th anniversary of the brewery in 1989, the steam beer was originally brewed according to the traditional recipes of the Wolfgang Pfeffer, the founder of the brewery. Since then it has been ripening in the old, deep rock cellars.

The fermentation with top-fermenting yeast ran quickly in wooden, open vats at temperatures of 18-20 ° C. This led to a violent, rapid carbonation, which caused large gas bubbles on the "ceiling" (foam above the liquid). These burst from time to time, giving the impression that "the beer is steaming". The name "steam beer" was born!

Bottle at Zeitgeist, Lambeth 10/10/08. Deep, slightly cloudy amber with a moderate, short-lived white head. Sweet caramel, red fruit and spice aroma. Flavour was also sweet, with a hint of spice, peppery hops and short, dry finish. Different and enjoyable.

Bottle, Carringtons, Manchester. Poured a dark amber colour with a vanishing off white head. Some vague sweet malt was happening , but really not much else. Watery, hints of rotting veg. Should have left this one in the cellar. Tedious.

At Bruxellensis 2008, Brussels, Belgium
Clear amber body with a white head. Aroma of hops and a bit caramel. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet flavour. Nice, but not great. Good balance, but lacks some complexity.

bottle. Amber colour, cloudy, large head. Malty and fruity with hints of apples, slightly hoppy as well. Has its very own character, every sip is highly interesting and enjoyable. Lovely beer, wish I had more of it.

On tap at Berliner Bierfestival. Clear, golden pour with an off-white head. Cellar, caramel and some fruity, pear I think, in the aroma. The flavor had caramel, some cellar, and a hint of pear. Medium body. A quite nice and fruity beer. (070803)

Sample from bottle. 1 year after BBD. Pours unfiltered orange/amber. Aroma is cellar and mouldy. Flat flavour, but better than the aroma. Not good.

(swing top bottle) Clear, amber colour with a fluffy, slowly lacing, off-white foam. Moderately sweet toast-malty aroma with subtle caramel and pronounced fruity notes of peach and pear. Sweet flavour, medium to light body, smooth carbonation. Toast-malty and fruity taste with soft, but spicy, slightly “corky” phenols; sweet, almost lingering, malt-accented, fruity finish with a whiff of hops. A well-balanced, quaffable brew.

Bügelverschlußflasche: Hazy, orangey to amber coloured, huge rocky off-white head; distinctive sweetish fruity (oranges, lemons, orange peel) aroma, traces of yeast, too; mild, but fizzy mouthfeel, sweetish (fruity and malty) taste; becomes a bit dryer in the fruity, citrousy finish, some mild acidity detectable. A nice "Wheat beer" without wheat.....or a "Belgian Ale" from the Bohemian Forest !
