Milestone Ale is a reflection of Jon Clegg and Tom Abercrombie’s past 10 years of brewing together. This collaboration beer is brewed using a non traditional process of stoning the beer, using granite stones that were heated until red hot and lowered into a wooden vat of unfermented Beer. This process caramelizes the sweet sugars that taste of caramel and light toffee. Tom selected the hops to add hints of pine, citrus and tropical fruit to complement the complex body of this historic Single Batch beer.

bottle pours light caramel with a medium off white head. Aroma is strong toasted malts and aged hops. Flavor is rich toffee and caramel malts with a earthen hop finish that lingers with some alcohol. Not bad.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy hazy deep orangey amber color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of piney and citrus hops is quite dominant with some notes of deep rich sweet malt. Taste is also a nice enough mix between some deep rich caramel malt with some bitter and citrus hoppy notes. Not too sweet or cloying which I enjoyed with a full body and limited filtration with medium carbonation. No alcohol was apparent. Not necessarily soemthign I would have very often but still enjoyable.

A reddish amber ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, pungeant hops, menthol and meat extract. In mouth, loads of malts and fragrant hops, oily mouthfeel, menthol notes, quite nice. Rich and hoppy. On tap at Portland location, April 2 2010.
