If you’ve ever been to our brewery, you’ve likely seen the old, beat-up truck that hauls away our spent grain. That truck belongs to Lugene, who’s been feeding his dairy cows the hearty malt for over a decade. Named in his honor, Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout is brewed with milk sugar and milk chocolate. The rich and creamy brew reminds us of a cold glass of chocolate milk and our hometown “Aggie” roots.

Lugene came my way by the likes of Total Wine in Ft. Worth. This evening a Teku glass is serving duty, time to move along. The arrival is a dark, rich mahogany brown with a wisp of tan foam gathered around the rim of the glass. The nose is lightly chocolate and field. I find the taste to be curiously ashy, milk chocolate, malt, grain, leather and the barest hint of berries. Slightly sweet and rather subdued if it is a true imperial stout. Not what I anticipated it to be. It happens.

Bottle. Blackish/brownish pour with a small beige head that soon turns into a fine ring. Aroma of chocolates and nuts. Flavor is over the top sweet milk chocolates. The palate was just a bit thinner than I prefer and the carbonation was weak. Finished medium and sweet. Overall: A bit sweeter than I prefer but still a quality brew.

Minnesota Trip Beer #86. Nitro keg at Muddy Pig, 5/9/2016. Clear dark red, thin creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, lactose. The taste is chocolate, lactose, caramel, coffee. Medium bodied, lingering sweetness (not cloying), well balanced. 600th imperial stout!
