Brown 500ml bottle BBD before Oct 14, poured into a UK pint sleeve in Nov 13. Labelled as a ’Dark Ruby Ale’ with an ’Old Codgers’ face at the front: ideal present on Fathers Day. It did in fact pour a dark Ruby colour, just like it said: on top was a full and lasting beige head. Malts rule the nose and taste: semi-sweet molasses giving dark fruit and dark chocolate hints in both aroma and flavour. A mild hop finish with a little bitterness adds to the whole package and stops the malts running away with too much sweetness. Fairly rich and creamy for a 4.8% ABV bitter: overall a good beer and one I’d happily have again.

Bottle from Asda. Poured a deep reddish mahogany with a thin tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate and red berry fruit. The flavour is medium bitter, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee with a little sweet fruit on the palate. A really great beer that reminds me of the Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild.

Bottle at JF’s, as ’labelled as Staffordshire Brewery’, 07/03/13. Clear mahogony brown with a thin beige head that quickly dissipates. Nose is burnt toffee, light chocolate, dark malt, a pretty thin nose that doesn’t give off much aroma. Taste comprises antiseptic, germaline, herbal notes. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, some bitterness in the finish. Couldn’t finish this one between two of us - twiggy nonsense at its best/worst!
