Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style barley wine that ages to perfection in oak barrels for several months before being blended, bottled and released in the fall. This highly acclaimed and awarded barley wine is a classic annual release of Midnight Sun, where a deceptively simple grain bill turns into big bold flavors hosting hints of caramel, vanilla, slight fruitiness, and strong malt sweetness that claw to the surface with every sip.

Review from notes 2007 Bottle Shared by MrBarleywine. Pours a deep copper color with a decent sized off white head that shows moderate retention. Aromas of dark caramelized sugar, dark pitted fruits, bits of wood, hints of rum and bourbon, light alcohol, no hop aromas. The flavor is sweet with dark sugars, light oak, light fruits, a solid hit of warming alcohol and a touch of earth. Medium to thick body with a moderate to light level of carbonation and a sweet almost sticky mouthfeel. One of my favorite barley wines, I only wish it were a little easier to obtain.

Bottle @ Steve’s house. 2011 vintage. Pours a fairly clear, red orange appearance with a thin off white head. Quite spicy, very woody, raisin, toffee, dark fruity aroma. Big caramel, rich toffee, dark fruity, light chocolate, somewhat boozy, a bit oxidized flavor that actually a little bitterness on the finish. Easy to stick for the abv but not an elite barleywine in my opinion.

First flavor is like licking caramel followed by oak, bourbon, vanilla, classic barleywine candy flavor, layers of flavor here

Tap. Pours cloudy brown, small tan head, creamy with nice lacing. Malty aroma, caramel, toffee, oak, perhaps bourbon, but its not strong. Flavor is similar, light to medium sweet, not a lot of bitterness to back it up. Barrel notes are present but very muted, and not a lot of wood astringence. Well rounded, but a little thin on character as compared to the best. Medium plus body, creamy mouthfeel.

66cl Bottle at WWT III. Deep dark brown colour, beige head. Aroma is quite sweet, pumpernickel, liquorice, molasses, chocolate, pipe tobacco. Flavour is a lot less sweet than expected, molasses, chocolate, roasted malts, toast, bourbon, berries, full and velvety mouthfeel, just packed with flavour. Full-bodied. Great, great stuff.

Bottle at WWT3. Poured a dark mahogany with a glass hugging tan head and an oily consistency. The aroma is rich and alcoholic. The flavour is strong bitter with lots of alcohol liqourice and rich fruit on the palate. A super heart warming beer.

(bottle) hazy amber with a small brown head; faint aromas of caramel and dried fruit; subdued and balanced flavour with a long light sweet finish; bit unusual in subdued flavour for the type, still good
