75cl bottle from Geers. Unknown batch. Shared at Jolien & Didier's place - thanks for hosting!

Hazy brown, small, foamy, tan head. Aroma of red apple, banana, prune, toffee, clove, green tea, wet wood, ruby port, vague beef stock. Taste has sweet red apple, banana and blue plum with a sourish blackcurrant streak in a toffee-like, bready malt body, slightly herbal & spicy, very vaguely umami (meaty) too somewhere. Tart red grape & apple in the finish, ongoing herbal notes and actual herbal hops, soft woody tannins and a warming alcohol effect balancing between port & red wine. Medium body, slick-oily texture, soft carbonation. Satisfying but less so than the Pinot Noir version.

0.75l bottle thanks to Lore. Brown body with a yolk head. Smooth caramel, nutmeg, cocoa and wood aroma. In the taste some cherries show up too. Sour cherry and even chocolate is more apparent in this beer than the pinot and chardonnay version. Very nice.

hazy brown colour, moderate sized creamy beige-ish ecru head; aroma of dried sour cherry, dry red wine and some dark chocolate; taste is quite similar to the aroma; good one!

New batch 2020. Dark brown/black colour, brown foam. Nose of caramel, light smoke, roastiness, red wine. Taste is rather thin, a bit earthy, leather with vinous finish.

One in a continuing series of barrel aged versions of Silly’s lovely old-fashioned Scotch (one of the last in Belgium effectively calling itself a ‘Scotch’), this time in Bordeaux wine barrels and seemingly brewed in 2018, but apparently a reprisal of a 2012 version so I'll just leave my rating here; 75 cl bottle in my case, with a front label that could easily be mistaken for a wine bottle label. Medium thick, off-white, mousy head, retaining well and lacing in shreds over a misty mahogany brown beer with amber hue. Aroma of caramel candy, bubblegum even, soggy peanuts, strong 4-vinyl-guaiacol (clove, meat juice), sangria without the fruit but otherwise very subtle in its wine element, chocolate cookies, ‘koetjesreep’, chestnut cream sauce, hints of thyme, apple peel, dry autumn leaves, tea, figs. Fruity onset, hints of green pear, red apple and unripe banana, fizzy carb, smooth body, slick and very rounded; very caramelly maltiness with lingering bubblegummy sides, brown bread and sandwich aspects, increasingly dried by a tannic red wine effect which turns out clearly stronger in the mouth than in the nose. Dry earth, tree leaf, nutmeg, thyme and clove aspects further accompany a warming, dryish finish, -in which the combination of the beer’s own sweetness and the red wine effect makes for an impression of tawny port rather than actual Bordeaux wine. Leafy hop bitterness and bready yeasty notes show up late, while this meaty 4-vinyl-guaiacol aspect returns retronasally. Gains some complexity in warming up, but the wine barrel element remains relatively subtle, all things considered, and ‘Belgian’ phenolic and estery effects take the upper hand in a not too elegant way. Passes, but as with previous editions in this series, I cannot help but expecting more – perhaps Silly Scotch is not the most suitable beer to age in barrels to begin with? As I once explained to a sales representative of this brewery, I think the beer world would rather welcome a barrel aged version of their classic saison, something I am still waiting for…

Corked bottle. Dark brown color. Confir cherries, malt and maybe a hint of oak in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor, with confit cherries caramel, and some dry notes from the oak. Decent, some more character would be welcome.

clear brown, smooth brown head. aroma of malts, booze, caramel, nuts, very well blended feel to the aroma at this age (2017) and not much oxidation. Flavor is malty, good woody bitterness, a very delicate dried fruity belgian yeasty note, almost going fresh fruity at times, palate is full. Although clearly drinkable now, i think it won’t do good to keep it longer. I haven’t tasted the base beer, but after having tasted this i’ll go track it down. complex and interesting.

Bouteille:Deep copper coloured, a bit unclear, stable medium-sized off-white head; mild to moderate sweet fruity (aka dried black berries) and caramelly nose with a port-vinous touch; moderate to solid sweet flavour not without a delicate acidity, medium to full bodied, unfortunately a bit sticky; chocolate and toffee in the fruity-vinous finish. Surely good…Surely not my favourite…
