Brewed with the finest Maris Otter and optic malts, sourced locally to the brewery, with the addition of three hop varieties including First Gold.

Southwold Bitter is a beautiful copper-coloured beer, late and dry-hopped with Fuggles for a distinctive, lingering hoppiness.

Brewed with the finest East Anglian Pale Ale malt barley, sourced locally to the brewery. We use Fuggles hops which we add late in the boil to preserve the herbal flavours of this traditional English hop.

First brewed in 1967, it was originally called Adnams Best Bitter. It holds our oldest trademark, Southwold Jack, and remains the original hero in our range.

Southwold Bitter is as distinctive as ‘Southwold Jack’ (the knight with the sword) who appears on the pump clip and has done so through many incarnations. Many Adnams beer fans would agree with our Head Brewer that Adnams Bitter is a truly distinctive pint. We wouldn’t be overselling it to describe it as a classic.

Bottle. Pours deep amber, somewhat clear with two finger vanilla/yellow head, lots of lacings. Aroma is malty, caramel, bread and some floral hops. Taste is soft, malt, caramel, muscovado sugar, and a light lingering bitterness with hops. Medium body, soft carbo, oily texture. Well balanced and very true to the style.

Bottle: Pours clear, medium amber-brown with a lively beige head. Apple, toffee aroma. Taste is a bit oxidized...apple, caramel malt, slight leafy bitter, fruit taste. Not bad, but obviously not a fresh specimen.

Shared 50cl bottle at Susie’s party. Appearance - dark amber with a decent head. Nose - toffee, biscuits and some apples. Taste - more toffee apple and biscuits. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly fresh finish. Overall - a decent bitter. So many of their beers are well executed but basically very similar.

Mørk brunrød farge med flott høyt skum som ligger langs glassveggen. Lukter karamell, appelsin, grapefrukt og noe humle. Ikke veldig fyldig og smaker bra bittert, men også noe metallisk i smak og ettersmak. Overall, helt ok..

First rating - 10/11/2013: Bottle from Asda, High Wycombe. RB score 6/3/7/3/13 (3.2) Copper with a low white head. Lots of malt, a little caramel, some autumn berries and a light earthy bitterness to finish. Yes it’s a standard bitter from a big regional, but as usual Adnams manage to do it a little better than the other big regionals and- somehow- manage to hide the pasteurization. Decent. Second rating - 8/3/15: Bottle that Dave shared with me - cheers! RB score 7/3/7/3/14. Really lovely rich malty flavour. Nice nuttiness too, with just a hint of berries behind. Good rich mouthfeel is spoiled just a little by fizz. However, as supermarket bitters go this is really rather good. Score shown is the average of all ratings.
