The First in our series, Saranac Imperial IPA, is brewed with ten different malts and ten different hops to make a delectably flavored and complex Imperial IPA. AT 85 IBU’s and 8.5% alc/vol This is a beer that is truly meant to be savored.

Bright golden-bronze. The aroma is strongly hoppy, a little lacking in brightness but with nice blackberry, peach and red currant. The body is a bit light, with a huge, unbalanced alcohol signature. Too thin, too much alcohol and the big hops from the nose don’t translate much to the palate.

Bottle. Pours a darkish amber color with a somewhat fizzy and fluffy head. Aromas are of pine and caramel. Flavor is uninspiring... out of balance alcohol, too much malt sweetness, not enough hops to call it an IPA, let alone an imperial.

Bottled. An amber beer with a medium beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with primary notes of grapefruit, and so is the flavor, leading to a dry bitter finish. A bit simple for a double IPA - but quite nice. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Degarth. Pours an almost clear, amber golden with a small, creamy, off-white head. Fresh aroma of citrus and peach. Medium body with sweet notes of caramel and...coconut (?) The finish is quite bitter. Decent but not exactly impressive. 120108

[Bottle @ Papsoe] Hazy amber with tiny head. Hoppy aroma with fruity notes. Same for the flavor that also holds caramel. Warming lcohol in the bitter end.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy orange/brown with a lacing white head. Hoppy aroma. Flavour is solid hoppy, slight liqourice edge. Subdued caramel malt flavour, medium dry. Ends mild spiced lingering.

bottle - Pours dark orange/copper with a medium sized head. The aroma is pretty mild for the style and of course is mainly of hops. The flavor is also hops dominated with some mild citrus notes and a decent balance. It ends in a fairly long, bitter finish. It won’t blow you away, but this beer is a good quaff for hopheads. I’m a little surprised that the ratings aren’t higher.

Well balanced aroma of pineapple and grapefruit with caramel undertones. Clear ochre color with a thin off white head. Harmoniously bittersweet taste of grapefruit, with moss or bark qualities. Bitter grass finish, but not all that bad. Actually quite good.

This beer is a clear dark copper color with a medium creamy off-white head that dissipates steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Citrusy hops and malt in the nose. Medium-bodied and moderately bitter with hops, citrus and malt flavors. The finish retains the bitterness and leaves a lingering hoppy aftertaste. Overall, Saranac is one of those brewers (like Flying Dog) that is a gateway brewer. Their interpretation of a IIPA probably won’t win any awards, but it is a passable and drinkable interpretation of the style.

Pours clear copper with nice off white head and decent lacing. The aroma is sweet pale malts, hints of alcohol and hidden in there somewhere is pine hops. The flavor has a mix of somewhat thick malts sweetness mixed with pine hop bitterness. There’s also a slight dark fruitiness and an olive brine quality that seem to enter the picture around the midway point. Then a pale maltiness takes over for a moment before bitter pine hops once again regain a hold of the flavor dominance. Lots of flavor that doesn’t really pull together. Too bad too. Seems to be plenty of potential with this beer.
