33cl Fles van De Kleine Deugniet. Zwarte kleur, beige kraag. Zachte whisky, drop, salmiak, hout, iets aards / prut, mokka, gebrande mout, pure chocolade, caramel, koffie, bitterzoete finish, licht boozy. Volle body. BA is vrij licht. Voor mij de minste uit de serie tot nu toe, maar dat zegt niet zoveel. Lekker bier.

Pours pitch black with a firm beige head with long retention. Aroma's: sweetish, drop/licorice, roasty, woody, a bit boozy. Retronasal it's sweetish, roasty, drop, light fruity. Flavour is moderate sweet, drop, roasty. Alcohol feel is quite strong. Long finish, roasty, moderate bitter. Not much barrel, but the alcohol strength is there. And the base beer is awesome anyway.

One of many barrel aged variants of Kromme Haring’s imperial stout, this time on barrels that previously contained Speyside whisky, though the exact brand remains undisclosed. Frothy, pillowy, membrane-lacing, yellowish beige head, very dark chocolate brown robe – in practice, black – with thin bronze-reddish edge. Aroma of old wood, old walnuts, ‘fondant’ chocolate, evidently whisky, cold Irish coffee, chocolate cake, salmiak, wet leather, salted caramel, some shoe polish. Dark-fruity onset in a clean way, prunes and currants, candied dates, sweet yet not overly so, gently prickling and bit minerally carb, full and oily body; layered dark-chocolatey, walnutty and caramelly maltiness, bittersweet but ending decidedly roasty and coffeeish, a bitterness embellished by pronounced oaky tannins (including that vanilla-like retronasal scent) adding a rustic, noble dimension. Strong hop bitterness too, quinine-like and rooty but hidden underneath the roasted grain bitterness, eventually all warmed by very whisky-like, yet somehow not annoyingly boozy alcohol. This is imperial stout the way I like it the most: nowhere over the top, not lost in ridiculous sweetness or burning booziness, but balanced, well-measured, elegant yet powerful and ‘classic’ in style. Absolutely lovely, but then I knew in advance that this was going to be a treat anyway, considering other Beluga iterations I had…
