Keg at Bundobust, Manchester. Dark brown, hazy, flat. Smell of sweet grapes, plums, booze, burnt caramel. Sweet taste with brandy and raisin, with a souring note in the finish. Very low carbonation, full, syrupy body. Wow.

hazy reddish brown colour, half inch of creamy beige-ish head; aroma of dried cherry, some vanilla, dark chocolate and definite citric acidy notes; taste is the same...it is really good BUT as a quadrupel...well, I don't know...

Alvinne’s core quadrupel aged in barrels that have previously contained Sauternes, the well-known, ‘noble-rot-sweet’ white wine from the Bordeaux region in France. Lot 0954 apparently, steinie bottle bought at Fontana in Sint-Niklaas in between Ghent and Antwerp. Mousy, thick, pale beige, creamy head, slowly dissipating but stable; cloudy dark ruddy-bronze colour with warm burgundy hue. Intense, complex and very noble bouquet of a lot of soaking wet vanilla-ish oak wood, blue grapes, indeed sweet dessert wine, tawny port, fresh figs, yellow raisins, yoghurt, hazelnut oil, red wine, rosewood, sherry, blue plum, touch of hay. Sweet onset, candied figs, ripe pear and medlar, medium carbonation, very full and bit vinous body; lovely caramelly and honeyish sweetness in the middle adorned with ongoing fruitiness and growing ‘woodiness’, very vanilla-ish retronasally so very clearly oak in a most noble and charming way; light tartness at the sides adding complexity, but nowhere actually sour, with the sweetness remaining firmly in place. Softly warming, port- and sherry-like alcohol in the end, accentuating flavours rather than interfering with them, while this lovely oakiness, fruity and malt sweetness and a hay-ish background hoppiness are drenched in a big, grapey, desserty Sauternes effect. Rich, complex and downright fantastic Alvinne once again, nothing less than world class and for me the best in the series of barrel aged Cuvée de Mortagne variants so far, at least of the ones I have been able to taste - reminding me that I need to get my hands on that Pedro Ximénez version as soon as possible, since apparently I haven't had it after all, contrary to what I thought...

Dried fruit, raisins, figs, strawberry jam, sweet wine, mouldy oak. A bit too sweet. Great stuff, just what you'd expect from Alvinne. 4 --- Beer merged from original tick of Cuvée de Mortagne Sauternes on 24 Sep 2017 at 09:01 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8. Original review text: Sampled at Borefts Bier Festival 2017. Hazy dark amber pour. Tons of dried fruit, barerl, toffee, fruit jam. I can't say I could drink a whole bottle, but a few sips go down quite nice.
