The Black Rose is definitely a source of pride in Békésszentandrás. This unfiltered doppelbock is slightly sparkling and measures at 22˚ Plato, which makes it a real delicacy for gourmets. It is a full-body beer, rich in malts, but still smooth and silky with a velvety taste, coffee and caramel flavours, sometimes with aromas reminiscent of dried fruit.

0.33 l bottle from Csak a jo sor, Budapest. Almost black color with small beige head. Aroma of plums, caramel. Taste, chocolate, caramel, raisins in rum, coffee hints. Alcohol is strongly present. Very nice beer, I can hardly believe that is from Hungary.

Bottled, thanks armando629! Ruby/black, small head. Grainy licorice aroma. Very dry with sake-like delicate grainy salmiak flavour. Surprisingly crisp and light bodied, low bitterness. Incredinly drinkable for a 9% beer, where did the alcohol go? Very unusual beer, but also very enjoyable.

Bottle 33 cl. RBESG Rome 2010. Courtesy of nate2g. Clear reddish brown with a rough off-white head. Sweet dried fruit and Belgian yeast in the nose. Solid body, dried fruit, yeast and a fairly alcoholic finish. I’d call this an Abbey Dubbel rather than a Doppelbock! 060610

4/7 0.33 l bottle courtesy of Doggythedog, thanks a lot for sharing! It poured dark brown, almost black body with smaller, short living brownish head. Nice sweetish caramel, chocolate, coffee and spicy aroma. Very nice flavor as well, caramel, chocolate, roasted sugar and coffee shows up again. Some licorice, raising and maybe wood adds up to its complexity. It has a bit of stout character, but it’s sweeter and smoother. Not too full in body, but tasty and alcohol was hidden pretty well. Long, just a bit warming chocolate aftertaste deservedly leaves the great impression on the beer. This is by far the best Hungarian beer I’ve tried! After many crappy beers, didn’t even expect something so extraordinary.

Bottle received in a trade with armando629 (thanks!), shared with heavy. Rated while listening to Thin Lizzy - Black Rose :D. Poured an extremely dark red-brown body, alost black with a small brownish head that went away somewhat fast. The nose is nice, malt, raisins, oily and carrying some light alcohol. The taste is quite better and this is indeed a great beer. Roasty maltiness, chocolate, raisins, bit coffee, maybe liquorice. Sweet, soft (maybe slightly lighter than expected), balanced and tasty. Warming from all the alcohol which would be appreciated in the winter (definitely not all that much now in July but that’s our fault really). The best Hungarian beer I’ve had so far and I really hope that their other smaller breweries take the cue and start experimenting more.
