Bourbon County Special #4 Stout is an oatmeal stout variant of our original Bourbon County Stout recipe, also aged in bourbon barrels, that uses crystal oats to add a nutty character and a smooth mouthfeel. After barrel aging, we added Intelligentsia Coffee, both their cold coffee and single origin coffee beans from Ethiopia, called “Metad Buku,” to bring out a pleasant fruity coffee character. Lastly bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup from Bissell Maple Farm in Ohio is added which provides complexity to the nutty oats and coffee to round out the flavors, ultimately reminiscent of your breakfast ‘special’ at the local diner.

Bottle pours out black topped with a ring of a tan head. Nose is nice sweet chocolate vanilla coffee maple and some classic Goose Island barrel. Taste is more of the nice sweet maple chocolate roast coffee barrel kick.

500 ml bottle. Aroma is lasting coffee, bourbon, and a hint of maple. Flavor has all the adjuncts with a nice full oat texture. As it warms it shows some bitter coffee. Maple comes through in different waves. Sometimes more coffee sometimes more maple. I solo domed this without issue. However, it may be best to split this with somebody.

Bottle from Colonial Spirits. Dark inky black in color with a thin tan head that recedes quickly. Coffee, maple, dark chocolate, with hints of vanilla and sweet bourbon. Light earthy toasty nutty to round this out nicely. My favorite of the varieties I got to try this year.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle. Aroma is fairly coffee forward with lighter chocolate malt notes and light roast, caramel and toffee. Light bourbon and maple notes. Light alcohol notes. Pours jet black with a medium small, thick, mocha head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers. Light lacing and long legs. Flavor is fairly sweet with malt notes of chocolate and lighter oats, roast, caramel and toffee. Hints of leather, tobacco, berry and dark fruit. Moderately strong coffee and maple notes. Medium bitterness and medium light alcohol notes with light bourbon character. Mouthfeel is full bodied and a bit creamy with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid stout with nice adjunct notes. The coffee is really nice and works well with the maple and bourbon notes. The oatmeal adds some nice mouthfeel as well.

On tap at Dive Bar. Pours black with a tan head. Maple, strong coffee, good quality espresso, raspberry, maple syrup drenched pancakes, slight capsicum note, chocolate brownie, bourbon in the finish. Medium body. Decent, though I feel the adjuncts mute some of the complexity of the base beer.
