50 cL bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a small off-white head. Aroma is dark malty and breadish roasted. Dark fruity and roasted malty with a mild bitterness coming through. Distinct acidic and roasted note. Lingering dark malty and somewhat acidic into the finish. Bitter and dark roasted malt into the far finish.

Bottle at home ... BBF 14/05/10 on 23/04/10 ... deep black ... thin tan head ... light roast malt nose .... fizzy ... no stout should be fizzy ... soft roast malt ... little toffee ... a sour tang without actually being sour (think this is more palate based than flavour ... little charcoal ... but its lacking body and depth ... would like to see this in cask ... but this isnt up to much.

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. ABV is 4.2%. Bottle conditioned. Black colour, huge tan head. Moderate aroma with some fruitiness and notes of mild coffee, hints of chocolate. Acidic / sour flavour, very strange for a stout, some coffee roastiness in the background. Did not do much for me this one. Disappointing.

Medium grayish brown head. Opaque black body goes dark red at the edges. Milky, sooty aroma. Thin, acidic sooty taste with traces of wild berries and cocoa. Watery mouthfeel. Dry cocoa aftertaste. Too acidic and watery. Probably be better if brewed with more alcohol. (0.5l bottle.)

500ml bottle from Cask & Glass, Tonbridge. I’ve had some dodgy bottle conditioned beers from this brewery, but the choc aroma on this assaulted me as I was pouring it. Very black with dark brown edges, lasting tan head. Choccy aroma, some smoke. Weird thinness in mouth. Over carbonated. More choc in mouth, some dark fruits. More choc on end. Fine, just needs more solidity in the mouth. Nice enough.

A black beer with no head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of licorice. The flavor is good with notes of licorice on a roasted malt background - but rather sour. Is the sourness due to lack of sugar? The body is thin.
